Question Was Ann Marie's character only tolerable on television

http://comforttv.blogspot.com/2022/0...-are-only.html

Quote:
I know I said in the intro to this piece that characters fitting this description are rarely leads, but in this case it’s not that Ann Marie was unlikable – she was often effervescent and delightful – but she was also exhausting. Would I enjoy lunch with her? Sure. But looking back at what she put poor Donald through in five seasons would give any guy pause about a closer relationship.

Take the episode “Secret Ballot,” in which Ann and Donald arrive in New York City after a two-hour drive from her parents’ home in Brewster, and then have to drive right back up because Ann forgot her purse. Ann’s parents are out for a walk when they arrive, and the house is locked. Ann decides to climb a tree and enter through her bedroom window on the second floor – and then she gets stuck up the tree. She tells Donald to trek over to the fire station to get a ladder. He begins to leave, stops, and then looks up at Ann and asks, “If I were to turn and walk away from here, never to return, would you understand?” Yes, Donald, we would.

She was cute and could be bubbly, which are the good qualities. But she could also be exasberating. Donald was a vey patient man and he usually always treated her wonderfully.

He did break their engagement; however, as in all sitcoms, he made it a happy ending by changing his mind.

I didn't even remember they were ever engaged! In which season did he break the engagement and why? (She was probably getting on his nerves, lol)

She accepted his proposal at the beginning of season 5.

I just checked the episode guide because I don't remember the episode where he breaks the engagement too well, and it's episode 16 of season 5. The description simply says he gets cold feet. The episode title is "A Limited Engagement"

Okay, thanks! I only see this show once in a while on Saturdays at 2:00 Central on Antenna TV. But I've always liked it. As with most series, I prefer the earlier seasons. In this case 1 thru 3.

Probably. It was not very real life at all.

I think most of the memorable episodes are from the earlier seasons. Ann getting her finger stuck in a bowling ball, and later, in the kitchen faucet; Don and Lou arguing over the word "awry;" Don and Lou fighting overt a fender bender and later over a Monopoly game; Ann and Don's disastrous first trip to Brewster for Don to meet her parents.
