Question What exactly went wrong with the "Clueless" TV series

I wouldn't exactly write the show off as a "failure". I mean it did last three seasons and 60+ odd episodes. Most sitcoms are fortunate enough to get a second season. It think that it's too easy to say that Alicia Silverstone as well as other key cast members like Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Breckin Meyer, etc. didn't participate it outside of one-off guest appearances in the first season.

But for some reason, the Clueless TV series has become a curious footnote in the movie's legacy when compared to something like say, the Iggy Azalea video. I was recently reminded of the series again when Todd in the Shadows said "Yes, there was a Clueless TV show" when discussing Modern English's one hit "I Melt with You".

I wonder of part of the reason the series supposedly gets a bad rap is that fans of the movie just wrote it off as a quick cash in. It didn't really have anything new to say or really capture the movie's "voice". It was I suppose like when ABC commissioned an Animal House TV series after that film's huge box office success some 15 years prior.

So, this show was considered poorly-created and it resulted as never being put into a DVD box series at all?

Reading into the old TWoP forums, there is the opinion that the show became near unwatchable when it moved over to UPN in its second and third seasons. They added all of those annoying sound effects and tried to make the show more overtly funny.

Plus, they had to do episodes that had a heavy-handed message - in particular when Cher's SAT tutor was pregnant and when Cher's long lost boyfriend died of a drunk driving accident.

I don't know if this is entirely fair but I wonder if Tim O'Donnell is if you want, "to blame" for the show having more heavy-handed messages. Tim O'Donnell for those who don't know, was the showrunner for most of the show's existence. He was said to have taken over for Amy Heckerling about ten episodes into the first season.

O'Donnell had previously worked on the TV adaptation of Uncle Buck for CBS and the Ferris Bueller TV series for NBC back in 1990 (who he did have experience at working on TV adaptations of films).

He is probably best known for his work on Growing Pains. And there's infamously, one episode where Carol's boyfriend Sandy, played by a young Matthew Perry, tragically dies after driving drunk. So it appears that O'Donnell tried to recycle that particular storyline for Clueless.

I for one, enjoyed the Clueless series. I even managed to find a seller who sold me the series on dvd he made with great quality. I would love an official release however. 60+ episodes is nothing to sneeze at, but I think for a show of that kind, that amount of episodes is all that is needed.

When it was announced that the movie Clueless would be getting a sitcom I think it meant that a whole entire series of Clueless was gonna be planned considering it was the top movie of 1995. So when the sitcom of Clueless debuted on ABC many people thought it would be just like the movie version but in my eyes the one thing that made this version of Clueless a failure was the absence of Alicia Silverstone as Cher and although Elisa Donovan did play Cher to perfection almost like Alicia Silverstone did in the movie it just didn't mix well. The only cast member to return from the movie was Stacey Dash who played Dionne and she made Dionne just like Dionne in the movie. I think what really caused the Clueless sitcom to get cancelled was the fact that even with merchandise tie-ins such as dolls computer games makeup and more ABC couldn't keep up with ratings and ended up moving the remaining episodes to UPN and ABC decided to cancel it even though it was a smart hit. I was twelve when the Clueless sitcom debuted and I loved it because I was obsessed with the Clueless movie to the point where I even dressed in clothing like Cher's too

Donald Faison (Murray) and Elisa Donovan (Amber) also reprised their characters from the movie to the TV series as well as Wallace Shawn (Mr. Hall) and Twink Caplan (Miss Geist). Shawn and Caplan however, were only apart of the first season on ABC.
