Default When Did Night Court Jump the Shark?

https://popculturereferences.com/whe...ump-the-shark/

Quote:
Today, we look at when (or if) you folks believe that Night Court “jumped the shark.”

This is “Just Can’t Jump It,” a feature where we examine shows and whether they “jumped the shark.” Jumped the shark (coined by Jon Hein) means that the show had a specific point in time where, in retrospect, you realize that show was going downhill from there. Not every show DOES jump the shark. Some shows just remain good all the way through. And some shows are terrible all the way through. What we’re looking for are moments where a show that you otherwise enjoyed hit a point where it took a noticeable nose dive after that time and if so, what moment was that?

With the new Night Court debuting tonight, I thought it’d be nice to feature the original Night Court, a sitcom about a wacky judge (Harry Anderson) and the various inhabitants (both the attorneys and bailiffs and all of the clients) of the night court in New York City. It ran nine seasons on NBC, with a few of them as part of the now-iconic original Must See Thursday lineup for NBC.

So first…DID IT JUMP THE SHARK? It definitely got worse as it went on (what show doesn’t?), but I don’t think it ever got bad enough to say it jumped.

WHEN DID IT JUMP THE SHARK Like I said, I didn’t think it did, but feel free to let me know if you disagree!

The last two seasons with new producers, writers and show runners. A lot of actors were phoning in their performances. There's other threads about Harry wearing glasses and losing his "unique spunk".

I would agree with you. You can see Anderson was not wanting to do this anymore, the others were tired.

Whenever you as a viewer, see Harry wearing glasses and sporting longer hair, it's a perfect indicator that you're watching an episode of Night Court when it was well past its creative peak. I get that Harry Anderson likely wanted us to see a more "mature" Harry Stone by the eighth and ninth season, but there had to have been better ways to go about it.

One of the best comments that I read is that Harry in those final years acted like he lost his family in a plane crash, given how depressed and morose he acted. At least Harry in the seasons leading up to that point, had some charm and was likable.

I previously had made note about how much of a number Stuart Kreisman and Chris Cluess, who were the showrunners for the final two seasons, did on the overall quality of Night Court.

What likely didn't help was that Dan became so popular and in effect, the show's breakout character (a la Fonzie and Urkel) that more and more stories and attention was given to him. Dan worked best as a foil to the actual central character (Harry), thus still keeping the show on-balance. But later on, Dan himself, got foils like his diminutive boss and Will and the con-artist twin of Phil.

It jumped the shark in season 8, it seems like everyone just did not want to do it anymore and having new writers and producers did not really help either
