The Night Court reboot has a sad storyline about the original series' protagonist, Harry Stone, and the true story makes the plot even sadder.

I have watched two episode of it and so far am not impressed. It just to me isnt funny, and the Dan Fielding character is just sad. Maybe you might think differently. I am not giving up on it however.

The woman who plays the prosecutor is beautiful however.

Having watched the first two episodes I agree, I'm not very impressed so far. While some of his foibles seemed to remain true to the character of Dan, I found him pretty sad overall too. I actually did get a little chuckle at the maintenance man, especially at the end of the second episode, but on the whole I don't find it very funny.

I will tune in again next week and maybe my impressions will change somewhat.

The new Night Court pays its respects to the late Harry Anderson

Actor Harry Anderson was beloved on the original "Night Court" and other famous shows like "Cheers," and his death in 2018 at the age of 65 due to a stroke was a loss for the television landscape. The new "Night Court" revival decided that instead of recasting the role of Judge Harry Stone, they instead would reflect real life. This has not been lost on those who remember the original show, with quite a few expressing their thoughts on social media.

On Reddit, u/mtm4440 tried to place some of the random items in Judge Abby Stone's office, and u/rattrap007 replied, "Armadillo was always in Harry's office so that made me smile. The pool ball was later explained. In one ep Harry gets depressed and quits. He becomes a pool hustler. Dan basically calls him out for quitting and gives him a speech that brings him back. The ball is a memento Harry kept to remember this."

Furthermore, u/Kitsunisan brought up the rapid fire nature of the jokes on this new "Night Court," and felt like if the show slowed down, the laughs would be a bit more robust. They then mentioned that Harry Anderson had great comedic timing, and added, "The guy was a stand up comic and a street performer first, and that way of delivery comes through in his lines. Melissa is a sitcom actor going through the paces here, she needs to relax into it." Still, it seems as if many still fondly remember Judge Harry, and are happy to see him referenced on this new show.

Night Court Vet Marsha Warfield Weighs In on NBC Revival — Might She Return?

Quote:
Night Court vet Marsha Warfield has rendered her verdict on NBC’s revival, which premiered this Tuesday night and earned an average TVLine reader grade of “B-.”

“I hear there’s a new Night Court in town! Congratulations,” Warfield, who played bailiff Roz on the original series, shared on TikTok. “I hope that it was as wonderful as it sounds, and I wish the cast and crew and everybody involved all the best.”

To former castmate John Larroquette, who on the revival is reprising his role as legal eagle Dan Fielding, Warfield said, “I can’t imagine a new show doing better than having you to build around. I hope everybody gets to learn as much from you as I did when I worked with you.”

Warfield was between sets at a comedy club Tuesday night, and thus admitted, “I didn’t have a chance to catch the first episode, but I will. But like I said, all the best to you, good luck, and I hope you have as much fun this time around as we did the first time.” (Watch her full TikTok.)

I watched some clips of the old Night Court show from the 1990's.

I sort of forgotten how much of a weasel that John Larroquette's character Dan was. He wasnt past redemption but he was incredibly snarky and mean at times. He told a man who was a midget who asked him for directions in the building to just follow the yellow brick road (the small man turned out to be his new boss and new worst nightmare). Plus the way he was so misanthropic with attractive women. He was a jerk.

Also, I have forgotten the crazy comedy in the old show. It was actually quite unique in a way which is why it lasted so long. The cast was also great and worked well as an ensamble。

Unfortunaty, what made the old show so funny would be pillored by the leftist politically correct crowd. The scene I mentioned with Dan and his midget boss. This would be "small people phobic", or the slimy way old Dan was with the ladies would be again pillored as anti-woman.

This new show seems to the shadow of the old show.

It's been addressed numerous times in the past, but it's very hard for a character like Dan Fielding to work in a post-#MeToo world. Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother was probably the closest Dan Fielding-esque sitcom character that I'm aware of to emerge in the years since the original Night Court went off the air, but even HIMYM as a in itself show, hasn't aged very well.

The revival probably has the right idea to present an "older and wiser" version of Dan. I mean, a person is bound to change and evolve over 30 year anyway. Plus, it would just feel even more creepy and pathetic to see a now 75 year old John Larroquette still act like a skeevy horndog around the ladies.

How Melissa Rauch's Judge Abby Stone Made 2023's Night Court Her Own

Abby Stone greeted viewers with do-gooder goals and a sweet smile, but Night Court's new judge proves she has the crazy heart to conduct its chaos.

Am I getting soft, or does this episode have a pulse?

The Apartment episode? Each episode has shown improvements. It occurred to me the weakest character had been Harry’s daughter. For a Judge she is too nice to everyone. So it’s a huge relief for her to show real anger. Actual emotion of any kind. I hope they stick with that. Not that she is angry all the time but has a real personality.

Also Dan is finally showing real energy too. It’s slowly been coming to the surface week to week. But this week coaching the DA it’s clear he was doing it for his own ego. That is Dan! Sure he is much older and wiser. Times have changed. But no reason Dan’s huge ego can not flourish in other ways.

Anyone know how many episodes are in the first season? I have been searching online and old posts in this thread and can not find any answer.

One thing I did find is someone attended taping episode of episode 7. Way back in May 2022. https://robonlocation.com/tv-tapings/night-court/

So I have no idea where they are in schedule now. It was known for long time NBC held back the show to mid season. They easily had finished enough episodes to start airing last Fall if they wanted to do so.
