When they taped the show they didn't leave the music on its own track so when replacing the music, they either had to dub dialogue with soundalike actors or just delete sometimes key scenes.

They didn't have any idea at the time that in the future there would be something called DVD's and that TV shows would be released on that medium. Or that their use of "real music" would become a major issue holding up the release of WKRP on DVD. It's just a shame that this issue has been so detrimental to the legacy of such a great show.

Some of the songs were just background music, but many fans remember songs that played during specific scenes and are very upset that the DVD version, and the syndicated version removed much of that due to rights issues.

The original rights granted had a 10 year clause on it (allowing for repeats, etc.) where it could still be used after the original showing. This issue first popped up in the late '90s, when it was picked up for syndication again by one of the channels as those rights had expired by then.
