Default Henry Winkler vs. Tom Hanks

Everybody seems to say Henry is one of the nicest, most easygoing guys in the business. A lot of people say the same about Tom. So why did these two get at loggerheads when filming Turner and Hooch? Even today, Henry doesn't want to talk about it, only saying that he liked working with the dog. Did they have different ideas of what kind of comedy was best for the movie? Did Tom want to ad lib while Henry wanted to stick to the script? Was it a classic case of director vs. lead actor power struggle? Did Henry say he knew comedy better because of HD's 11 seasons while Bosom Buddies struggled to survive two, offending Tom?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Henry Winkler alludes to not getting along with Tom Hanks while filming Turner & Hooch

It's been rumored since 1989 that Winkler and Hanks don't get along

Quote:
Gary came in and asked if Henry was fired from the movie Turner and Hooch. Henry said he was. He was the director and he was fired 13 days in. Gary asked if it had to do with Tom Hanks. Henry said he was asked to leave the movie after 13 days. Howard asked if he hates Tom Hanks. Henry said no. Howard asked if he thought the movie Turner and Hooch was a good movie. Henry said he doesn't think he ever saw it. Henry said he was very sad that they let him go. He said they only said that ''it was not on the screen.'' He said that's all they told him. He said that they never told him that Tom said anything. He said they still had to pay him for the movie but no amount of money can help in a situation like that. Henry said he called his wife and it was hard to speak language to her. Howard asked if he thought everyone knew he was fired from the movie. Henry said it felt like he was wearing a sign on his back. Henry said it's very rough on you. He said you fear that you will never work again. Henry said that comes with just about everything.

Howard asked who replaced him on Turner and Hooch. Henry said it was an English guy. He said that he likes Tom Hanks and that's not the guy he's talking about. Howard asked if he likes Tom. Henry said he does. He said he loved the dog though.

For years I have been telling you that the permanent A list mostly movie actor with multiple Oscar nominations/wins and another on the way is not the person you see portrayed in his carefully crafted image. Some of that came out this week via a former back in the day A+ list actor. Tom Hanks/Henry Winkler ("Turner & Hooch") (Henry Winkler has been feuding with Tom Hanks since 1989)

The basic opinion of the matter is Henry Winkler apparently stood up himself and his vision, and thus he was ousted from the project.

Quote:
“I was directing that movie for 13 days, and then I was called into (former Walt Disney Studios chairman) Jeff Katzenberg’s office and he said, ‘Do you have everything with you? Go home.’”

Asked if Hanks really was behind his departure, Henry said, “I got along great… with that dog. That dog… love that dog.”
Of course, neither one is willing to discuss the matter at length, but what is certain is that there were apparently a series of disagreements about the general direction that the film was taking.

And to think Mr. Hanks HAD worked with Mr. Winkler in a HD episode so perhaps Mr. Winkler thought that things would go smoothly working together again in that movie. However,it should be noted that Mr. Hanks played someone who'd been bullied by the Fonz when they were younger and the episode was called " A Little Case of Revenge".

I can't imagine anyone not getting along with Tom Hanks, but I guess it could happen. And vice versa b/c Henry Winkler seems like an amazingly nice person. That's probably why he was so vague in that video. I didn't realize that he had been directing it. I bet it would have been a lot better had he been able to continue.

Something about Tom Hanks has always turned me off, so I can see Winkler not getting along.

To borrow a quote from Todd in the Shadows, learning that Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler have been feuding is almost like finding out that Mr. Rogers got into a fist fight with Carl Sagan.
