Wow, this is an old thread !

The show had promise, but just couldn't seem to generate any chemistry even though it seemed to have all the right ingredients.

Maybe it should've been a more risque/sexier show ? Maybe more of an HBO/Showtime thing ? Maybe it was never meant to be a network show ?

IMO the first season was great. They spoilt it in the second season by losing the ex husband, his girlfriend and the father and having Ron Silver join. Him and Kirstie had no chemistry to start with but as the season went on it picked up. The third season was quite good though I hated the new look office space. It looked too fake. Josh sat on a high rise desk that looked stupid.

I have never understood why Veronica's Closet became a monster hit. When my mom and I first saw it I think NBC wanted to have Kirstie Alley make a comeback to the sitcom world after Cheers had ended and so with Veronica's Closet marking Kirstie Alley's sitcom comeback NBC knew that with Veronica's Closet with Kirstie playing the leading character Kirstie Alley would expand her horizons and become a superstar again. I also thought that Veronica's Closet was based on Victoria's Secret and it seemed that the creators of Veronica's Closet wanted to have Kirstie Alley's character work in a store modeled after Victoria's Secret. I am surprised that Victoria's Secret didn't sue NBC for basing Veronica's Closet on their stores. But besides Cheers this is one of NBC's most underrated sitcoms that starred Kirstie Alley and will probably never be shown in reruns again

Why do you feel it was a "monster hit"? It was a decent show. A few hilarious scenes. In the 90s, comedies were in demand. It was much easier back then for a show to last half a decade.

The most obvious and easy answer is that it was placed the time-slot in-between Seinfeld and ER for its first season and between Frasier and ER its second.
  • Season 1 - #3, averaging 24.4 million viewers a week
  • Season 2 - #5, averaging 19.3 million viewers a week

The third and final season was when NBC moved the show to Monday nights.
  • Season 3 - #86, averaging 7.97 million viewers a week

You can joke that shows like Veronica Closet, Suddenly Susan, and Caroline in the City only did well because they followed hits that people actually wanted to watch but were too lazy to change the channel when they came on.

You could write a management book about how NBC squandered its Thursday night on crappy shows. First shoving just anything in between Friends, Seinfeld, and ER. Then just repeatedly cloning the Office with critical hits that no one watched.
