As far as I know, they never mention him again. A rather pathetic ending if you ask me. I'd like to have a goodbye scene between him and Ann, Schneider, Barbara and the rest. He was family for two years and suddenly, POOF, he's gone.
Obviously they didn't renew his contract. Considering he was on for a few seasons, it's a lousy farewell. They could have done something at the end of the 8th season.

I can only imagine they didn't bring him back because Ann was newly married to Sam and maybe the writers wanted the newlyweds to not have a teenage boy living with them. But I just don't buy that Alex would all of a sudden up and decide to leave everyone here to live with his mom. But it is what it is.

I can buy that he went back to his mom. It is his mom, after all. We had met her, and she wasn't evil or anything. That's a perfectly logical way to write him out. But I don't buy that Mark wouldn't know. Wouldn't the whole family have known and had a big farewell dinner for him? Maybe they did but no one invited Mark. At least Alex was nice enough to send him a card. Or maybe Alex just told Ann he was leaving and then snuck out in the dark of night and no one else knew where he was.

Maybe toward the end of season 8 they still thought he'd be back.

He went off to do a sitcom called Jennifer Slept Here. It only lasted one season, 13 episodes, but since ODAAT also ended that year, even if he stayed the kid would still have been unemployed in the summer of '84.

Fair enough. And if they had to write him out, going back to his mom would be the most logical. I just had a hard time with that. Seeing as he became a part of the family here with Ann, Barbara, Schneider and the hubbies.

The way I pictured it was that Alex went to visit his mom and decided to stay there for the semester once he was already there. So, in that case, he wouldn't have had a big farewell with any of them. Just maybe an over the phone goodbye.

Agree. Either the one sided phone call bit, or at least a bunch of characters sitting around saying how much they'll miss him but he's with his mom and family where he belongs and he's happy.

Pretty much any way is better then the Mark card and Ann's "He decided to spend the semester with his mother. Frankly, I've got mixed emotions about it."

Here's some random bits of trivia. Don't know if you planned to get to any of this or not. I'll do the episode, then the trivia...

Farewell, My Suite-- the phone number at the apartment is 555-4124

Peabody's War-- The address of the apartment is 1344 Hartford Drive. However in
The Meaning Of Life-- the address is 322 Beck Street.

Amarillo Connection-- Ann says there are 22 other families in the building

November Song, Part 2-- Ann says there at least 80 other people in the building

Alex Moves In-- We learn as a kid Barbara had a dog named Patches

Ann's Friend-- Barbara's favorite cookies are peanut butter. However in
Baby Love, Part 2-- they're chocolate chip

Dinner At Seven, Part 2-- The meal Barbara cooks for Mark is rock Cornish game hen, wild rice almondine, watercress salad, and for dessert, a simple flan.

Thank you. I will include those... as soon as I stop procrastinating!

Take your time. This is an ongoing project.

I'll toss stuff in when I think of them. You'll find most of my stuff is Barbara-centric, which leaves lots of room for the other characters.

--In 'The Broken Nose', despite the title, the nose is in fact, not broken, but the cartilage is off center.

--In 'Girl With A Past', we learn that at some point after moving to Indianapolis, between episodes, Barbara had pink eye

and in perhaps the most important information ever revealed on the show

--In 'Pressure', Barbara says her bra unhooks from the front

At the time of Cliff's six appearances, him and Valerie were a major real life couple. I'm sure it was their breakup that led to the end of Cliff. In his last appearance, Cliff and Barbara were at a strong place emotionally, and then suddenly you never saw him again.
