Default Why did Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando Florida close?

When it first opened at Universal Studios Florida in 1990 Nickelodeon Studios was the stomping grounds where all of the top Nickelodeon sitcoms game shows and other Nickelodeon shows were filmed and I have never understood why Nickelodeon Studios closed after so long? Was it due to moving their headquarters to New York or Nickelodeon found it too expensive to film their sitcoms and other shows there? I always thought Nickelodeon Studios had a unique building and the slime fountain was a neat addition to the studios whenever I would see it shown during the end of Nickelodeon shows on TV. Is the building still there or when Nickelodeon Studios closed did the building get torn down and replaced with something else?

The building is still there.

From the “never inaccurate site”, Wikipedia (hehehe):

“On November 9, 2006, Universal announced that Stage 18 would be redesigned to become a 1,000-seat permanent venue for the Blue Man Group.[51] The new venue opened on June 1, 2007, as the Sharp Aquos Theatre, and later was renamed the Blue Man Group Theatre in 2012. Their residency ended on February 1, 2021, leaving Stage 18 vacant.[52]

“The Nickelodeon Time Capsule buried by the network in 1992 was removed in August 2007 and reburied at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort. Upon the hotel's closure in 2016, it was reburied at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and is set to be opened on April 30, 2042.[53]

“Nickelodeon returned to film My Family's Got Guts in 2008, using some of the former Nickelodeon Studios facilities including the green room.[54] Training was in Stage 19, and the actual production was filmed nearby on Stages 23 and 24.

“The complex became popular for urban exploration, as Universal left much of the original Nickelodeon branding intact for years after the studio closed. In 2012, YouTube personality adamthewoo gained access to Stage 19 and the upper floors of the video production building, documenting vastly untouched murals and decor from the heyday of the studios.[55] A majority of these remnants have since been removed.

Stage 19 and the video production building are now home to Bally Sports Florida and its sister network, Bally Sports Sun”

The Rise and Fall of Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Orlando

Quote:
Over the following years, Nickelodeon Studios saw a decline in production as executives began the transition from live action game shows and sitcoms to animation following the success of shows such as Ren and Stimpy and Rugrats. With time, most of the filming began to take place in California rather than Florida.

We take a long, year-by-year look at Nickelodeon Studios, the center of Nickelodeon's operation and the prize attraction of Universal Studios Florida. In what ways was it a good idea? In what ways was is it a bad idea? And just why did it ultimately fail?

In 1990, in conjunction with the opening of Universal Studios Orlando, Nickelodeon Studios had officially opened to the public. But it's purpose as the new headquarters for the Nickelodeon network, where all future shows like Double Dare, Kenan & Kel, Slime Time live and so many more would be filmed, was quickly becoming unprofitable. Despite it being a popular attraction within the theme park, the studios closed and were left completely abandoned. Join me today as I take a look at what happened to this deeply beloved studio/attraction, and what ultimately happened to its iconic façade.

I think many people who were required to work in Florida, loathed the experience. Future productions moved to California studios and very few people were left. The 2008 recession probably cinched the decision to close it permanently.

I'm not into theme parks, but I have watched many travelogues about Florida parks. It seems like most theme parks need to reinvent themselves every 3-5 years or people start losing interest. However, both Disney and Universal (and others) hate spending $$$ for renovations. I think Nickelodeon loved the novelty of having a Florida attraction, but it wore off after a few years. Then it became a burden having to "deal" with daily tourists visiting their HQ.

The Best of Nickelodeon Studios Video is a truly fascinating little rabbit hole from a lost media perspective. I made a promise that I would cover it at some point in time, and that time has come. Later than expected, but it has come nonetheless. Please don't kill me I know you waited nearly five months for this.

What Happened to Nickelodeon Studios Florida? The Rise and Abandonment of a '90s Icon

In the early 1990s, Nickelodeon did something no one else had ever done — they turned a TV network into a real, physical experience. At Nickelodeon Studios Florida, kids didn’t just watch their favorite shows… they could step inside them.

From slime-filled game shows like Double Dare to action-packed competitions like Legends of the Hidden Temple and Nickelodeon Guts, this place was more than a studio — it was a dream for an entire generation.

But behind the bright colors, live audiences, and nonstop filming, something was quietly going wrong.

By 2005, Nickelodeon Studios suddenly shut its doors — no big farewell, no major announcement. And what was left behind became one of the strangest abandoned spaces in theme park history. So what actually happened?

In this video, we explore:
  • The rise of Nickelodeon Studios inside Universal Studios Florida
  • Why the “real working studio” concept started to fail
  • The shift in the theme park industry led by The Walt Disney Company and Universal
  • How production moved back to Los Angeles
  • The quiet closure of Nickelodeon Studios in 2005
  • The eerie abandoned years that followed
  • And what remains of the building today

This is the story of how one of the most iconic places in '90s TV went from a groundbreaking idea… to a forgotten, hidden corner of a theme park.

If you grew up watching Nickelodeon, this one hits different.

With Double Dare and all its spin-offs proving there was a market for game shows aimed at kids, Nickelodeon created Legends of the Hidden Temple while also building and moving into Nickelodeon Studios.
