Show started on ABC on Wednesday Night at 8pm and went up against the Carol Burnett Night on CBS and Adam-12 on NBC.
The show was never moved to a new time slot during the 1972-73 season Charlotte Rae from Different Strokes and Facts of Life appeared in eps 11 and 13 Potsie from Happy Days made an appearance on episode 2 Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller who played a couple on Archie Bunkers Place did the same on this show Jodie Foster appeared in episode 5 Marcia Strassman from Welcome Back Kotter appeared in ep 15 Tom Bosley from Happy Days and Gordon Jump from WKRP appeared in episode 19 Teddy Wilson from That's My Mama and Good Times appeared in episode 20 Alan Hale Jr from Gilligan's Island appeared in ep 21 Dick Van Patten from Eight is Enough appeared in episode 23 The show final TV ranking was #46 out of 75 shows for 1972-73 TV season The show was tied with Mash at #46 and one spot lower than Brady Bunch which was #45 and was still cancelled Critic Review from Chicago Tribune's Clarence Petersen, "Lynde's new situation comedy is the worst I seen since Me and the Chimp. Gilligan's Island by comparison is a comedy classic." It was right up there with Mash so you would think the show would get one more shot

The show had potential. It ran too much like a play instead of a sitcom. The constant set ups for Lynde got old. His family characters barely had any depth. They were just tokens to set Paul up for the next laugh. The show could have worked if they spent time developing characters instead of making Paul the center square and the only one allowed to get laughs. It had a good premise a hippy daughter and son in law live inside his home. But it sort of was an All In The Family rip off.
It was decent but when the writers only write laugh line after laugh line instead of developing characters, those shows never make it. This show reminded me of Lotsa Luck. The writing, the lack of depth of the characters except for the lead actor. |

The show WAS Lynde. They probably needed another regular so he alone wouldn't have had to carry the show.
The show essentially was a play with its three camera setup, which was new for Screen Gems. I wonder why they picked that format. |
