June 21: Happy Birthday Juliette Lewis

Juliette Lewis is 49 today. Lewis, who currently stars on Showtime’s Yellowjackets, is pictured above with three of her costars. From left to right, you have Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Lewis, and Christina Ricci.

Lewis was an Oscar nominee as a teenager, as Danielle Bowden in Cape Fear. For the next several years, she had major roles in some high profile films, including Kalifornia, The Basketball Diaries, and From Dusk Till Dawn. One of her most famous roles was as Mallory Knox in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers.



Lewis was born in Southern California. Her father was character actor Geoffrey Lewis; the two appeared together in The Way of the Gun and Blueberry. She began working in film and television in her teens. She was a regular on the short-lived ABC sitcom I Married Dora in 1987, and made her feature film debut in My Stepmother Is an Alien.





Lewis has never really become a major film star but has worked in film steadily for over 30 years now. Along with the films already mentioned, a partial filmography for her would include Strange Days, The Other Sister, Picture Claire, Starsky & Hutch, The Darwin Awards, Whip It!, August: Osage County and Jem and the Holograms.

On television, Lewis was an Emmy nominee for the 2002 TV movie Hysterical Blindness. She has been a regular on the legal drama The Firm and the anthology mystery series Secrets and Lies. She also starred on the short-lived HBO comedy series Camping and season 2 of Facebook Watch’s Sacred Lies.

In the 2000s, Lewis pursued a music career for several years. She released two studio albums as the lead singer of Juliette and the Licks. In 2009, she released a solo album titled Terra Incognita.

Lewis’s most recent feature film appearance was in Breaking News in Yuba County. Later this summer, she will begin filming on season 2 of Yellowjackets.
