Did Mary look drastically different if not a tad unwell in Season 6 (1975-76)? I know that Mary was a diabetic in real life, which could explain why she was so thin early on. But didn't her face by this point, suddenly look puffy and bloated? Simply put, she no longer looked like the ingenue that she started off as when the show began.

Along with the diabetes , I had read Mary was a pretty heavy drinker, very bad for a diabetic!

She was also a smoker for much of her life back then. And in her last few years, the drinking and smoking took a big toll on her diabetes. Luckily she had quit both some years before she died. She suffered those last couple of years, sadly.

Yes, I've heard that too and believe it. She was only shown seated in that reunion show because by then it was difficult for her to walk. But I applaud her for appearing with the other cast members. She was a true lady.

Mary acknowledged at times that as a diabetic, she shouldn't have been drinking like she was; like other addictive behaviors it can be so tough to break decades-old habits.
In her 2009 book subtitled "Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes," Mary details being at a party and needing to be told who she's seeing and is greeting her, as her eyesight was failing so severely. So sad that she was struggling in several ways. |
