The CW gives early renewals to seven shows: The Flash, Kung Fu, All American, Nancy Drew, Superman & Lois, Walker and Riverdale
The youth-skewing network usually hands out early renewals in January. But with its pending sale, the early renewals were delayed until March. The Flash was renewed for Season 9, Kung Fu for Season 3, All American for Season 5, Nancy Drew for Season 4, Superman & Lois and Walker for Season 3 and Riverdale for Season 7. |

Batwoman and DC's Legends of Tomorrow were cancelled last Friday.
I'm more pissed about the cancellation of Legends of Tomorrow because it was the only show I even bothered to watch regularly on The C-Dubs, and I once said I would have kept it around for decades if I had owned the network. And now, thanks to the CW's still-unknown new majority owner, LoT is just another long-running series that has died on a cliffhanger, and there's no point in re-watching that series because of this. A lot of goodbye messages from its EPs are a sure sign that LoT's season-7 finale cliffhanger will be unresolved FOREVER.![]() I didn't really care for Batwoman, having refused to watch it because of its continued used of all-caps closed-captioning (something that no scripted program needs to use in 2022, quite frankly). https://deadline.com/2022/04/batwoma...cw-1235013317/ https://deadline.com/2022/04/dcs-leg...ns-1235013375/ |

I am glad the one show I watch on the CW (World's Funniest Animals) is safe for another season after today's carnage. What I watch here will double if I like Family Law.

The CW's cancelation of a slew of shows marks its biggest-ever transformation as ratings become a priority ahead of its sale
After years of expansion, The CW went down to 11 new and returning shows on Thursday with Legacies, Charmed, Dynasty, Roswell, New Mexico, In the Dark, 4400 and Naomi joining the recently canceled Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman. The cancelations are a result of the pending sale to Nexstar and a change in the fundamental way The CW operates and makes decisions, as Deadline's Nellie Andreeva explains. "Having functioned as an extension of its parent companies’ studios, Warner Bros. TV and CBS TV Studios, the CW’s role had been to help launch series which the two studios can exploit in streaming and international," says Andreeva. "A number of renewals over the years were dictated by the shows’ value to the studios, not the network, which explained why the low-rated Dynasty ran for five seasons on the CW. The show, which was canceled today, was the subject of a rich deal between CBS Studios and Netflix and making money for the studio regardless of its performance on the CW. After the CW’s sale, while Warner Bros. and Paramount are expected to retain minority stakes and continue to supply programming for it, their interests will no longer be above those of the network. The 2019 end of WBTV and CBS Studios’ Netflix output deal for the CW programming also played a role in some of the cancellations as newer series go to HBO Max/Paramount+ and do not bring in external streaming revenue, putting more pressure on them to deliver for the studios. (The end of the Netflix pact has been beneficial for the CW, which can now monetize its shows with a full-season stack for all of but The Flash, Riverdale and All American.)" ALSO: Julie Plec, who saw the cancelations of two of her CW shows and one NBC show on Thursday, compared the axings to Red Wedding. |

A list of shows that were cancelled by The CW last Thursday (May 12):
Naomi (season one) Legacies (season four) Dynasty 2017 (season five) Charmed 2018 (season four) 4400 (season one) Roswell, New Mexico (season four) In the Dark (season four) The only renewal that day was (unfortunately) All American: Homecoming, for season two. If that show (and the 2021 version of Kung Fu) does not start using lowercase closed-captioning instead of all-capitals CC, they will provide some good cancellation options for The CW in Spring 2023. |

“I realize the pattern was different from what we have done in years past so I can see why it has come as a bit of a shock to you and the fans," The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz told reporters this morning. "None of these were easy decisions, we had long conversations with our studios and parent companies and everyone recognized this was a time of transition for The CW. Unfortunately, some difficult financial and strategic decisions needed to be made at every level and despite some rumors out there content was never a factor in deciding not to move forward with the shows." Pedowitz added: “We had an idea early on, which shows could be bubble shows. We did not know 100% what would happen so we tried to encourage all of these producers to treat their finale as if it could be a series finale. We wanted to do the right thing by the series and by the fans. Ultimately, the producers are stewards of their own creative vision. Unfortunately, it’s the fans that lose out by these decisions." ALSO:
The CW boss touts the network's "brand unity" that was missing at other upfront presentations While other upfront presentations featured networks being part of major media companies, The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said at his network's upfronts: “We are The CW on broadcast, on streaming on social media. One name, one brand.” |
