i think it ended too soon but according to ratings reports from that era there was alot of audience falloff after different strokes and even though i think therre was still room for both shows the bottom line was that the facts of life drew higher ratings than hello larry in the post different strokes slot

Yes NBC connected the show to Diffrent Strokes and viewers still didn't watch the show. They had three crossovers with Diffrent Strokes and that didn't work so the show was just bad. |

I saw on YouTube a comment that addressed the rumor that Johnny Carson was grooming McLean Stevenson to become his permanent co-host on The Tonight Show. But after McLean jumped ship to do Hello, Larry, Carson began continuously making fun of Hello, Larry to the point where the show became a pariah and was canceled after two seasons.

I don't know what else the network could have done to help this show. After failing to win an audience during the series' first half season, the show was retooled a bit, moved to a new night, placed behind two successful shows and was allowed to remain in that timeslot for the entire season. 38 episodes is enough of a sample size, the show didn't attract enough of an audience, at some point it becomes a case of throwing good money after bad.
