Before writing Starstruck, Rose Matafeo read the scripts for several romcom films, from L.A. Story to Before Sunrise. But Ephron's script for When Harry Met Sally had a big influence on how she wrote her show. In Ephron’s script, “so much of the character and the story is revealed in dialogue rather than the big print,” says Matafeo. She liked that the screenplay wasn't overly didactic about the performers. She wanted to leave room for her performers to bring their own approach. “Though I am there in person being like ‘oh why are you doing it that way’,” she adds, laughing. ALSO: Matafeo intended Starstruck to be a reversal and subversion of the Notting Hill formula. |
