"This week’s game-changing announcement that The New York Times Company has purchased Wordle — the hit online game in which once a day players get six chances to guess a five-letter word — has re-ignited the annoyance of word game fans who were already I-R-A-T-E over the fact that Wordle is essentially the same game played on TV’s Lingo for more than 30 years," reports The Wrap's Diane Haithman. "The New York Times purchase of Wordle for low seven figures from its creator, software engineer Josh Wardle, seems to have added an edge to the debate. But both social media and game-related blogs have been at it for weeks noting the similarity of the games as Wordle has taken off as a widespread phenomenon. The New York Times did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the similarity of the games." |

When Lingo made it's GSN debut many people thought it was simply a way for Chuck Woolery to make his return as a Comeback Kid to game shows but little did we also know that it bought a style of game show genre back to TV which was word games and since Lingo was a remake of a 1987 game show of the same name and Scrabble being popular in game shows in the 80's people thought game shows that guessed words would be popular as time went by. And so when GSN debuted Lingo it was a smash hit and with Chuck Woolery as host made it worthy to watch. I saw an episode of Lingo once and I don't think Wordle copied Lingo but the only thing that might've been copied from Lingo was the bonus round and in the actual game of Lingo when you guessed the word correctly your team would get a numbered ball and see if the number listed on the ball was on your Lingo board. So while I think Wordle might've ripped off Lingo they used Lingo for inspiration for designing Wordle
