Sony announced this morning that "a complete re-imagining" of cartoonist Aaron McGruder's Adult Swim series is in the works. The news comes four months after McGruder briefly revived his comic strip that inspired the series to tackle President Trump and R. Kelly. The Boondocks premiered on Adult Swim in 2005. Its first two seasons aired between 2005 and 2008. Season 3 was shown in 2010. The Boondocks' last season, Season 4, aired in 2014. According to Sony's announcement, "the reboot, a satire for the modern era, is said to chronicle the adventures of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules the fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland with an iron fist." Comedian John Witherspoon, who voiced Granddad, teased the reboot in a March appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast: “I’m on the cartoon. What is it? The Boondocks? I didn’t change my voice for The Boondocks. And they coming back,” he said. “The Boondocks is coming back. It’s one of the best cartoons I’ve ever been on.” |

HBO Max Picks Up "The Boondocks" Reboot for Two Seasons and a Special
by Marcus Jones September 18, 2019 HBO Max announced Wednesday that they picked up two new seasons of "The Boondocks", centered on two young black brothers and their Granddad navigating suburban life, and a 50-minute special. “There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” said creator Aaron McGruder. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now—both politically and culturally — more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.” "The Boondocks" makes its return in Feb. 2020 on HBO Max. https://ew.com/tv/2019/09/18/the-boo...asons-special/ |

Cartoon Connect Video: The Boondocks reboot from HBO Max has been delayed once again. According to reports, an exact release date was not specified and only stated “later in 2021,” meaning it could see another postponement if needed. A reason behind the delay was not given. HBO Max ordered 24 episodes across two seasons in June 2019, with the episodes originally scheduled to premiere by Fall 2020. A “complete re-imagining” of the series “for the modern era,” the reboot will feature creator Aaron McGruder, who left the original show before its fourth and final season, as the showrunner. A 50-minute special is also in the works.

The Boondocks reboot is dead at HBO Max
Even though HBO Max gave a two-season order to a revival of the Aaron McGruder cartoon in September 2019, the streamer has opted not to move forward, reports Deadline, which adds that Sony will evaluate other options for the project. |
