I've noticed that when Family Entertainment Television (FETV) aired the first season (which was originally produced in black & white), it was colorized. It was from what I've gathered, the only show on NBC at the time that wasn't broadcast in color with the exception of Convoy. If you in the past, rented the first season of IDOJ from Netflix, then they were colorized. They also had footage of one of the original b&w episodes in one of the "features".

The Colorization of the first season of IDOJ is actually very good considering costumes, sets and props were different than from the second season, the first in color. What is even more impressive is the colorized BEWITCHED episodes - since there is very little difference in sets, costumes and props between the first two (B&W) Seasons and the first color season (3rd Season) They had the advantage of source material (season 3) that better matched the earlier seasons, just in color. There's a reason the dining room walls are Green in Season 3 - Green looks better than white in B&W! They didn't change those till Season 4 or so. It was around this time a handful of B&W features and a bunch of THREE STOOGES Shorts were also colorized. |

I actually liked the black and white episodes. I didn't realize that they had been colored. Black and white just gives it a vintage feel.

I heard that it would have added at least $600 per episode to film in color. Sidney Sheldon offered to pay for it from his end but he was talked out of it as everyone assumed the show would flop.

When Nick-at-Nite started in the 1990s, my daughters were young and came running to me. "Mommy, something's wrong with the TV! The color all went away!" I went in to check it out and had to laugh, they were watching Leave It to Beaver. A few days later, they came running to me again. Not only about the color running out, but they were telling me about "this lady who wears an outfit like Jasmine's and keeps blinking and funny things happen." I knew then they were watching IDOJ - First Season. So Nick-at-Nite did run it in B&W. BTW, you can own either the color version or the B&W, or both. I own both. |
