Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert's older sister Wendy has died at 46 years old.

Lacey, 39, shared the tragic news in a heartbreaking Instagram post, in which she opened up about her grief over the 'shocking loss' of her older sibling, while paying tribute to the two sons she left behind.

Sharing an old photo of her late sister, the actress - who was raised in Mississippi before moving to California - wrote that she is 'so broken' over her death, adding that her heart 'is shattered into a million pieces'.

'My beautiful sister, Wendy. Our hearts are shattered into a million pieces that I don’t know how we will ever put back together again now that you’re gone,' she wrote.

'We love and adore you more than we can ever say and we will continue to forever and ever and ever. The shocking loss has left us so broken hearted.

'Our lives will never be the same without my dear sister, but we cling to the promises of Jesus that we will be together again in eternity.

'Please keep our family, especially her two boys, in your hearts and prayers. Thank you so much.'

The cause of death has not been released. It appears that Wendy - who was very private and didn't use social media - was living in Texas at the time of her passing.

She had two sons with a man named Shane Riggio, 45, however, it's not known if they were still married at the time of her death. She worked as a baker at the grocery store chain Market Street.

Many celebrities flooded the comment section of Lacey's post to send her their love and support.

Sister, Sister alum Tamera Mowry wrote, 'Oh dear Lacey! I’m so so sorry! Praying for you, Wendy’s family, and your family.'

'I'm devastated and heartbroken! I am so sorry Lacey! Sending you so much love!' Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart added.

Actress Danica McKellar said, 'Oh my goodness, Lacey. I love you so much and am sending prayers and love to you. I don't know what I could possibly do but please call on me if I can do anything at all.'

Wendy and Lacey, who is most known for playing Gretchen Weiners in the 2004 movie Mean Girls, share another sister named Chrissy, 44, and a brother named T.J.

And the actress appears to be very close with her siblings, and she often shares sweet tributes to them on Instagram.

'Couldn’t let #nationalsistersday pass without saying how much I love my two sisters,' she gushed back in August. 'They are the best big sisters ever and I thank God for them every day. Love you, Wendy and Crissy.'

In honor of National Sibling Day a few months earlier, she also wrote, 'Happy #NationalSiblingDay to the best two sisters and brother a girl could ever have. Love you guys so much.'

Lacey and her three siblings grew up in Purvis, Mississippi, with their parents - Julie and Tony Chabert.

As a child, Lacey played Claudia Salinger in the sitcom Party of Five. She went on to voice Eliza Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys and appear in movies like Lost in Space and Not Another Teen Movie.

But it was her role in Mean Girls that really propelled her into the spotlight.

After her time in Mean Girls, Lacey continued to act - starring in more than 20 Hallmark movies over the years and lending her voice to various cartoons including Family Guy, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny, Shimmer and Shine, and more.

She married her longtime boyfriend David Nehdar in 2013. They welcomed a daughter together, named Julia, in September 2016.

Despite her and her siblings all living in different areas now, Lacey previously revealed how they stay so close. She explained that they always make sure to always get together for the holidays - no matter how busy they are.

'I have started to realize how much I love our traditions now that I'm a mom. As I'm passing down those traditions to [my daughter], it's almost like we get to relive our childhood,' she told Southern Living.

'My sisters and brother and all of my nephews - I have seven nephews - try to be in my parents' home for Christmas Eve.

'We have a white elephant-style party and and all end up fighting for a particular gift that is so silly.

'We eat and we cook the same things every year. There are recipes that have been passed down from my grandmother and my great-grandmother and my mom.

'It's stuff that I grew up eating as a child during the holidays. I love the tradition of doing the same thing year after year.

'On Christmas morning, we open presents and everyone stays in their pajamas all day long, eats a huge dinner, and we watch our favorite movies.'
