Default ACS to tackle Bill Clinton's impeachment with Monica Lewinsky as producer

https://tvline.com/2019/08/06/americ...nica-lewinsky/

The Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal will be the subject of FX's Impeachment: American Crime Story, starring Booksmart's Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp and Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones. Lewinsky will serve as a producer on the third American Crime Story series. Impeachment: American Crime Story will be written by Sarah Burgess based on Jeffrey Toobin's bestselling book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President. Paulson and Ashford are American Crime Story veterans, with Paulson winning an Emmy for playing Marcia Clark on The People v. O. J. Simpson and Ashford playing Elizabeth Cote on The Assassination of Gianni Versace. “FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace,” FX Chairman John Landgraf said in a statement. “This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining. Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency.” Production will begin in February 2020 with a scheduled premiere date of Sept. 27, 2020.

ALSO:
  • FX chairman John Landgraf defends airing Impeachment: American Crime Story near the 2020 presidential election: "The idea that we can’t have art, we can’t have nuance is toxic in the media environment," Landgraf said at the TV press tour. "I believe very, very strongly in the art we’re making. I don’t think Crime Story is going to decide the next presidential election. I think that’s a little hysterical from my standpoint. I’m insistent that I’m going to support artists and make great art and put it in the time and place where people are going to watch it."

Monica Lewinsky on producing Impeachment: American Crime Story: "I’m privileged to have this opportunity"

"I was hesitant, and truthfully more than a little scared to sign on," Lewinsky wrote in an email to Vanity Fair following FX's announcement that she would serve as a producer on Season 3 of American Crime Story, focusing on her scandal with Bill Clinton. "But after a lengthy dinner meeting with Ryan (Murphy), I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalized in all of his brilliant work. I’m privileged to work with him and the other talented people on the team, and I’m privileged to have this opportunity. People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades. In fact, it wasn’t until the past few years that I’ve been able to fully reclaim my narrative; almost 20 years later. But I’m so grateful for the growth we’ve made as a society that allows people like me who have been historically silenced to finally reintroduce my voice to the conversation."

Hillary Clinton won't be a significant character on FX's Impeachment: American Crime Story

"Hillary is actually not a significant character in Impeachment because it's really told from the point of view of these women who were really far from the center of power," FX CEO John Landgraf tells The Hollywood Reporter of the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal season of American Crime Story. "It's really a revisionist history as told through the point of view of these women whose stories did not seem in any way central to the political stakes of what was going on but who became really central to that. Hillary is a character in it, but she's not one of the main characters in it."

Ryan Murphy: Impeachment: American Crime Story won't necessarily air before the 2020 presidential election

FX's announcement last month that the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal series would air in the final weeks before the 2020 election proved to be controversial. “I was a little shocked at the idea that a television miniseries could change the future of our country,” Murphy told The New York Times while promoting The Politician. "But I have to say I really do understand peoples (sic) sensitivities and I feel like that was just a placeholder to us and we’ve not committed yet on when we’re going to release it.”

Sarah Paulson plans to gain weight to play Linda Tripp, recalls lack of offers after The People v. O.J. Simpson

"I’m going to take about three months off to eat some food, because I’m going to gain some weight to play her," Paulson said in discussing her Impeachment: American Crime Story role at the New Yorker Film Festival on Saturday. "I don’t want to wear a suit because I think it will feel very strange. And also, this story is not a story that we’re unfamiliar with, but it is being told through the lens of the female perspective in terms of the three main women who were involved in this impeachment: Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp. And part of it is about the invisible nature of these women, so I didn’t really feel like it would be a great idea for me to come to work putting on some faux suit and be all pumped up with prosthetics and not be able to move my face or feel the feelings that she might have been feeling." Paulson also discussed her Ratched role and recalled her last American Crime Story experience. "The minute the show was over, I think Sterling (K. Brown) had several offers for movies," said Paulson. "And I was offered nothing," Recalling winning a Golden Globe and Emmy for playing Marcia Clark, Paulson added: "I did think it was strange that it was a full year after it had been over. And I did have this extraordinary thing happen with statues and things — and with those things, you think, comes more opportunity — and, nothing was coming to me. And I thought it was so interesting that for him, as a man, it was immediate. And mine took a little bit longer." Paulson made sure to note that Brown "deserves everything, always," as the actors have remained close since their co-starring on the FX series.

In regards to "American Crime Story: Impeachment" — is the current impeachment going to have an impact on the storytelling?

Also any idea on the air date, because it was reported that it was going to air before the election?

Look when you make a TV show, one of the things you have to do is say we’re going to start shooting at this date, and it will be available at whatever date. That’s something we’ve done for every show that I’ve done. And then the dates move or they stay the same depending on what we’re doing.

I think we’re pushing "Impeachment" a little later in the spring because I’m directing Prom with Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden. Also Sarah Paulson is taking a couple of months off for her transformation as Linda Tripp, so we’re just starting to get into the conversations about that.

So we still don’t know. We have an airdate. I know that a lot of people have big opinions about that, about whether when that will air. I can tell you that we’re shooting in the spring. It was February, now it’s late March.

And to answer your question about current events, I can honestly say ‘No’. We do a show that is very thoroughly fact checked and vetted and based on best-selling book by Jeffrey Tobin.

I think the reason why it’s interesting is because you don’t have to change anything to feel modern. And I think that idea of impeachment obviously with Trump is fascinating. I wouldn’t say that we’re changing things that much or mentioning Trump at all in our narrative.

Clive Owen to play Bill Clinton on Impeachment: American Crime Story

Owen will star opposite Beanie Feldstein, who'll play Monica Lewinsky and Sarah Paulson, who plays Linda Tripp, in the drama series based on the former president's White House sex scandal. Owen is expected to begin filming in March.

FX's Impeachment: American Crime Story may not air until after the 2020 election

The Bill Clinton impeachment scandal limited series from Ryan Murphy that counts Monica Lewinsky as a producer won't premiere in September, as scheduled, FX announced this morning. FX's announcement last summer that Impeachment: American Crime Story would premiere shortly before the 2020 presidential election sparked controversy because of concerns Clinton's 1998 impeachment would actually become a talking point during the election. FX CEO John Landgraf announced at the TV press tour this morning that Impeachment is being delayed due to Murphy's busy schedule, not because of the controversy. Murphy is currently directing a film and won't be available to start making Impeachment until late March. “So that means we won’t be physically done actually shooting the episodes until October, because of the long production," Langraf told reporters. "So I think we initially announced that we’d air in September, and I don’t think that’s reasonable, frankly, given that it won’t finish production until October. As for when we’ll schedule it… we don’t know. We sort of have to get into production, sort of see how the production goes, how long the production is going to be. So I guess I would say it’s TBD at this point, but I don’t think we’ll make it by September.”

Impeachment: American Crime Story casts Billy Eichner as Matt Drudge

Eichner will play the Drudge Report founder, who first broke news of the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair on Jan. 17, 1998, reporting that Newsweek editors were sitting on a story by investigative reporter Michael Isikoff.

Beanie Feldstein and Monica Lewinsky have become close in their Impeachment: American Crime Story collaboration

"Playing someone real is a huge undertaking — playing someone who texts you is a completely different thing," says Feldstein in a joint interview with Lewinsky for The Hollywood Reporter. "I mean, I’m playing someone who sends me videos, and I’ll go to respond, and I’m fully wearing her hair. (Laughs.) But of course it was daunting because I just want to do right by her. All that matters to me is what she thinks." Lewinsky is a producer on Impeachment: American Crime Story. As she points out, it's unusual to have somebody being depicted so heavily involved in the depiction. "Listen, I had no idea how this was going to work, and neither did they," says Lewinsky. "It was a bit like an arranged marriage. They’re these people who are excellent at what they do, who have won tons of awards and who have made incredibly compelling programs that have taught us something as a society. Then here comes me, who hasn’t done anything in scripted TV but is supposed to have a role here, and I could see from their perspective why it would be both valuable and terrifying — in the same way that it was for me."

Monica Lewinsky hired a therapist to help her process her emotions while watching Impeachment: American Crime Story get made

“There’ve been some really, really difficult periods in this process for me, so I’ve been creating a patchwork of support in a different way than I’ve had before,” Lewinsky told The Hollywood Reporter. “I have somebody who’s a therapist — not my traditional therapist, who’s a trauma psychiatrist, but someone who’s both a friend and one of my helpers — and I pay her and she sits on Zoom while I work on my notes so I’m not alone. Because it’s hard. It’s really hard." ALSO: Lewinsky urged writers to include her thong-flashing incident.

Clive Owen was cast as Bill Clinton on Impeachment: American Crime Story because of his "emotive eyes"

"Clinton was known for taking up a lot of space in a room and for having a certain type of magnetism, which Clive inherently has. All eyes go to him,” says executive producer Brad Simpson. “Clive has something that Clinton also has, which is a lot going on behind these really emotive eyes. Then there’s the basic thing, of course, that Clive is just an incredible actor.” When Owen was first approached, he had some misgivings over the role. But ultimately, Owen said he was up for the challenge of playing the disgraced president. “There’s something sort of attractive about being scared. It pushes you to do things that you would not ordinarily do,” he says. “And the fascination of trying to recreate some of that footage exactly as it was — I couldn’t shake that off.”
