I loved the show but you are a couple of years late handing in your review.

Raising Hope is outstanding. Definitely agree it is underrated. I don’t know that many people who have seen it, but the ones who have love it. It’s wacky while being so well done it’s believable.
Only complaint is a little too much potty humor for my taste. The success of other modern sitcoms like Modern Family proves you don’t need to gross out your viewers to make them laugh. A little less blue would have made it perfect. It’s tempting to wonder if this was an attempt to make it edgier to offset the generous helpings of heart. But even with that, it outshines all its contemporaries. The writing is inspired. The characters are truly likable, the kind of folks you’d want for your next door neighbors. (Well, maybe two doors down…;-) My favorite is Burt, brilliantly played by Garrett Dillahunt. Not to take anything away from Martha Plimpton’s Virginia, Maw Maw, Jimmy, Sabrina, Barney and the rest of the colorful cast of supporting characters. The stories are unpredictable, some otherworldly. The writers did a great job of making each episode self contained while ongoing story arcs make the series well worth watching from beginning to end. The music helps vault the series over the rest. The show’s opening theme music is the only weak spot. If you haven’t seen Raising Hope, you should give it a try … by the end of the first season you’ll wish you’d been watching all along. |
