I suppose it's interesting to note that Father Dowling preceded a few current British "crime solving priest" dramas where the priest does FAR more detective work than......priesting.

The executive producer Dean Hargrove wrote several episodes in the third season which strayed away from the original murder mystery theme and explored theological ideas. These proved highly controversial and due to the number of complaints, ABC cancelled the show. This was actually the second time the series had been cancelled as NBC had cancelled it after Season 1.

My Mother, who passed away this past December, LOVED the show when it was on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. I'd try to watch it with her but it was on so early.
