Drake Bell Arrested in Ohio, Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Child Endangerment

Jared Drake Bell, who played Drake in the Nickelodeon series "Drake & Josh", was arrested in Ohio yesterday and charged with attempted endangerment of a child and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which allegedly stem from a 2017 internet chat.

The actor pleaded not guilty after being arraigned yesterday in Cuyahoga County court and is free on a $2,500 personal bond. He agreed to have no contact with the alleged victim in the case.

Bell, now 34, was taken into custody yesterday by Cleveland police following a May 21 indictment. His mugshot was taken Thursday at Cuyahoga County Jail.

While details of the charges were not disclosed, Cleveland’s Fox TV affiliate, WJW, which broke the story, reported that the allegations stem from a Dec. 1, 2017, internet chat with an underage person.

Bell, who resides in West Hollywood, was in Cleveland at the time of the alleged incident to perform at The Odeon Concert Club.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for June 23.

Drake Bell, the former children's television star who is facing accusations in Cleveland related to an incident involving a teen girl, has pleaded guilty to the criminal charges against him.

In a brief pretrial hearing Wednesday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, the 34-year-old Bell (who went by his legal first name of Jared during the proceedings) admitted to both attempting to endanger children (a felony) and disseminating material harmful to juveniles (a misdemeanor). The actor was already out on bond and attended the hearing via Zoom.

Police say the incident occurred back in December of 2017, when Bell was performing at the Odeon Concert Club in the east bank of Cleveland's Flats. At the time, Bell was 31 and the alleged victim was 15, and while authorities did not specify what happened at the club, they did claim Bell and the girl knew each other for years and that he sent her appropriate messages in the months leading up to the concert.

He has appeared in court today over Zoom instead of appearing in person. This doesn't surprise me and shows what a coward he is, but I am not a coward."

Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, who was sentenced to two years’ probation and community service in July after pleading guilty in charges stemming from his online conduct with an underage fan, says in a new Instagram video that he did not know the age of the fan at the time of their virtual communication and that “all conversation and communication stopped” when he became aware.

“I responded to a fan whose age I didn’t know,” the former "Drake & Josh" star says in his first non-courtroom public response to the case. “When I became aware of their age, all conversation and communication stopped.”

He added that the fan “continued to come to shows and pay for meet and greets,” and that he did not know that the person he met on those occasions was the same one he had ceased communicating with online.

Bell states that “there were no sexual images, nothing physical” between himself and his accuser. “I was not charged with anything physical,” he says. “I was not charged with the disseminating of photographs or images or anything like that. This is strictly over text messages.”

Bell acknowledges in the video that his behavior was “reckless and irresponsible.”

Bell’s plea involved no charges related to physical contact.

“It’s not me telling you that the claims are false,” the 35-year-old Bell says in his new video, “but the state of Ohio has proven the claims to be false. If these claims were remotely true, my situation would be very different. I would not be here at home with my wife and my son.”

“When I was presented with a plea deal because of the messages,” Bell says in the video, “I felt that it was the best way to get this over quickly and for everybody involved to be able to move on and for me to get back to doing what I love, and that’s making music for you.”

Bell also says that despite media reports, he never legally changed his name or moved to Mexico. “Don’t believe the media right off the bat,” he says at the video’s conclusion. “It’s a lot of clickbait. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions.”
