Peyton Elizabeth Lee Gets Lead Role in Disney+'s "Doogie Kameāloha, M.D."
"Doogie Howser" Female-Led Reboot "Doogie Kameāloha, M.D." Picked Up to Series by Disney+
by Nellie Andreeva September 10, 2020 Disney+ has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to comedy "Doogie Kameāloha, M.D." (working title), a re-imagining of the popular 1989 ABC series "Doogie Howser, M.D.". The project comes from "How I Met Your Mother" and "Fresh Off the Boat" alumna Kourtney Kang and 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. Written by Kang and set in modern-day Hawaii, "Doogie Kameāloha, M.D." follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spit-fire Irish mother who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl. "Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.", which had been in development for Disney+ since early 2020, is slated to go into production later this year for a 2021 premiere on the streamer. I hear casting is underway for the lead and the other major roles, with an intention to shoot the show in Hawaii. “Thirty years ago, a young medical prodigy took the world by storm and left a lasting impact on pop culture,” said Ricky Strauss, president, Content and Marketing, Disney+. “Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!” https://deadline.com/2020/09/doogie-...us-1234574289/ |

Neil Patrick Harris is "so happy" that Disney+ is making a gender-swapped Doogie Howser reboot
“The creator of it was a big producer on How I Met Your Mother," the original Doogie Howser star told Variety of Kourtney Kang, whose mixed-race heritage inspired Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee. "I think setting it with a female protagonist is a great call… I think it’s in really good hands.” |

Check out Peyton Elizabeth Lee in Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who plays 16-year-old medical doctor Lahela "Doogie" Kameāloha on the Disney+ reboot, says she wasn't familiar with the original Doogie Howser, M.D. "My parents knew about it and loved the show. When I got the audition I started watching it, but that was my first introduction to Doogie Howser," she says. Lee adds: "One of the really cool parts about this reimagining is that we take this iconic story and bring it into the world we're living in now. So it's a female lead instead of a male, and she is biracial, and it's in Hawaii so we have this beautiful backdrop. It has nods to the original but also feels very modern." Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. reveals its premiere date and Doogie Howser-inspired opening title sequence and theme song Disney+'s reboot of Doogie Howser, M.D. premieres Sept. 8. Steven Bochco gave his blessing to a Doogie Howser, M.D. remake before he died in 2018 “Literally in the last days of my dad’s life, my dad’s like — and he was never one to repeat himself — but he said you have something here, and they’re yours. So go do it,” Jesse Bocho, Steven Bochco's son, said at the TV press tour. Bochco created Doogie Howser with David E. Kelley. Jesse Bochco and Steven Bochco's widow, Dayna Bochco, are among the executive producers on Disney+'s Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. |

Disney+'s Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. offers a strong template for how to update a well-liked franchise
The Doogie Howser, M.D. reboot created by Kourtney Kang and starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee as the 16-year-old doctor in the title role solidly improves on Disney+'s "perfectly fine take on Mighty Ducks and many leagues better than Turner & Hooch," says Daniel Fienberg. Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., he says, "executes a fine balancing act between playing to an older audience’s nostalgic appetites and simply telling a good, admirably personal stand-alone story. Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. starts with the wise choice to exist in a world in which Doogie Howser, M.D. exists, as a TV show. Lahela Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) is a 16-year-old medical prodigy living and working in Hawaii. Because she’s so young and causes so much confusion every time she enters a room, older doctors refer to her as 'Doogie,' a reference she barely gets because she’s been too busy becoming a doctor to watch Doogie Howser, M.D. repeats on Hulu. The Jake Kasdan-directed pilot is packed with homages, including a lovely ukulele spin on Mike Post’s original theme music and Lahela’s nightly vlog entries instead of Doogie’s journal musings. Such details as the way Lahela’s best friend, Steph (Emma Meisel, effectively steering into her character’s comic creepiness), visits Lahela only through her second-story window will trigger smiles of recognition from more venerable viewers without distracting the target audience. The question with so many reboots and remakes is 'If you took away the nostalgia, would there be anything worth watching at all?' And the answer with Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. is 'Absolutely.'" ALSO:
