TV "The Price is Right" Celebrates 50 Years w/ CBS Primetime Special

"The Price is Right" Celebrates 50 Years with Primetime Special on CBS
by Erik Pedersen
August 16, 2021

CBS will mark 50 years of contestants comin’ on down for "The Price is Right" with a two-hour primetime special next month.

Set for 9-11 p.m. Thursday, September 30, the special will look back at the biggest winners, never-before-seen outtakes and a salute to Bob Barker.

The show has the most enthusiastic and fun audience that one could ever ask for,” said Barker, who hosted TPIR for its first 35 years.

They truly were and are the heart and soul of the show …. It was an incredibly memorable ride. Congratulations to The Price is Right on 50 historic years. Here’s to 50 more!

Hosting The Price is Right has been a dream job for me,” said Drew Carey, who has fronted the show since 2007.

I really never thought my safe space would be on a sound stage, wearing a mic, cameras on me constantly, and with millions of people watching. But that’s what ‘The Price is Right’ is for me. I love it.

Only problem is- The Price Is Right's real 50th anniversary was in November 2006, but they didn't even mention it back then- just like 2014 was Jeopardy's 50th anniversary, not its 30th anniversary.

The great Johnny Olsen & Rod Roddy passed and I hope they talk about them and there legacy on The Price Is Right.

Naturally you must talk about the Legendary Bob Barker.

It would be a real treat and Classy Respect if they can get Janice & Diahne & Holly & Kathleen to come for a cameo or atleast a Virtual shout out to there fans. I know things ended pretty ugly BUT there legacy lives on with The Price Is Right as much as Bob’s Johnny’s Rod’s and Drew’s! They deserve as much as Respect as well!

The Price Is Right started in 1956 on NBC and later ABC hosted by Bill Cullen
Jeopardy started in 1964 on NBC hosted by Art Fleming
Both shows had the same original announcer, Don Pardo, and both shows had/have Johnny Gilbert as an an announcer.

Of course, Wheel Of Fortune will probably claim it's their 40th anniversary in 2023, but they actually started in 1975 on NBC hosted by Chuck Woolery..

Bob Barker reflects on The Price is Right entering its 50th season

"I'm often asked what I loved most about my years with Price, and the first thing that pops to mind is ... the money, of course!" the 97-year-old Barker joked to People. "All kidding aside, there was much to love. I had the pleasure of working with a dedicated and talented cast and crew for 35 great years. Particularly close to my heart was the ability our vast popularity gave me to remind our entire audience daily about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets." Meanwhile, Drew Carey is getting ready to kick off his 15th season as Barker's successor. "There's so many things that have happened in my personal life while I've been on this show," says Carey. "My son Connor is 16 now, and I've watched him grow up. In a lot of ways I feel like I've been here my whole life.'

Since it's debut The Price Is Right proves to still be the world's longest running game show ever and since it's humble beginning in 1956 The Price Is Right has held on through good times and bad times and it still is surviving today. But there are some fabulous moments the show has had such as Adam Rose's million dollar win to Drew Carey's debut replacing Bob Barker and much more. And with new and retired games that are favorites of TPIR fans such as Hit Me Any Numbers Race Game Range Game That's Too Much and Plinko The Price Is Right has still improved with these changes and it shows that game show favorites can survive even with a new host. But all and all this special will show how awesome TPIR still is after all these years

And there you have it. CBS simply doesn't want to acknowledge that a version of The Price is Right existed before theirs started that aired on a network that is still a main rival today. Technically they would still be correct in claiming 50th anniversary as it is just the CBS version with Bob Barker and Drew Carey they are recognizing. A lot of younger fans who wouldn't know who Bill Cullen was will accept this anniversary.

From what I have heard about Bob Barker, he was horrible to those models and got them unjustly fired. So even if Bob wasn't blocking them from appearing on the special, I wouldn't blame them if they wanted nothing to do with something honoring the man who did them wrong and hated them so much that he used his power to get that era blocked from syndication. Sure, TPIR fans might think those models are an important part of the show. But they probably want to really distance themselves from it.

(does not believe certain parts of this message (specifically the parts boldened for its quotation here))

I would think Drew would love to have them on for special appearances BUT since Barker handed the mic over to Drew he’s probably stuck in a rock in a hard place. Perhaps one day Drew will be able to get Janice & Diane & Holly & Kathleen on.

Sorry if I misread is the Anniversary show for Bob Barker or The Price Is Right even though it’s all one of the same?

Hope they will bring some of the old music back & in addition some old games like Super Ball & Hit Me and etc.

As I mentioned in another thread, I would have loved to seen how Drew would’ve handled Holly’s mishaps on stage. Probably with lots of laughter.

I didn't know that Drew had a son. Interesting things you find out when you read and post on this website. By the way, how long has Drew Carey hosted Price is Right?. I am not a watcher of the show.

This is just referring to these game shows' current incarnations, not when their original incarnations were launched.
