It was grittier than The Mary Tyler Moore Show and it was an unusual premise to spin off a sitcom character into an hour long drama. But they seemed to have found a way to make it work considering that it ran for five seasons.
You can say that the premise for a real drama was already lurking in the Grant character. He was a hard boiled journalist from way back and more than one episode of MTM focused on his journalistic ideals. Ed Asner is if I'm not mistaken, the only actor to win Emmys in two categories for playing the same character, Supporting Actor in a Comedy (The MTM Show) and Lead Actor in a Drama (Lou Grant). It was however, weird in that it was supposed to be the same character from The Mary Tyler Moore Show--they mentioned he used to be a TV station manager in Minneapolis, and that he had an ex-wife named Edie and several grown daughters--but even so he never once mentioned Mary or Ted or Murray. |
