Maude is a very funny sitcom, but to be honest, it did get quite dramatic, like you said. I think I have the same problem with One Day At A Time. A very witty sitcom, but it’s very dry and too pro women. For some reason, usually, I just can’t get into female geared sitcoms, with the exception of The Golden Girls and Designing Women, but that’s it. The show hardly had any male lead characters. The premise of the show was about a divorced mother, raising her two teenaged daughters, all by herself, after relocating. And then I think it became harder to watch when they married off Ann, Barbara, and Julie.

I'm watching Maude now for the first time and I like it.
It's a bit of "history," watching a show from the 70s, and I love seeing Bea Arthur before she played Dorothy, along with Rue McClanahan playing such a dizzy character. |

I feel the same exact way. You could tell they acted together before when the two of them went on to star on The Golden Girls.

I don't see that with Maude. There are some serious episodes, like Walter's suicide attempt. But they took a lighter approach to things compared to All in The Family. They had more humor. All in The Family takes the dark turn a lot of times like when Beverly dies or Edith is almost raped. I don't think I'll be rewatching All in The Family anytime soon when I finish it. Maude, I'll always rewatch because I found more humor than drama.

I feel that way about Mike. His dumbass behavior irritates me so much. That's another reason I'm not interested in rewatching AITF again. I never thought of it but Gloria and Carol, who are around the same age, are entirely different. Carol was raised to be smarter and stronger. Gloria had a lot of insecurities since she stuck with a guy like Mike. Gloria did whine a lot. But if you were with a guy like Mike, I think it's natural. Gloria would have been different if she had been with a guy who loved her instead of Mike who used her and her family to support himself.

I was 7 when Maude started so I do remember my family watching it but at that age I was too young to understand a lot of it. But I have watched it several times in reruns as an adult and yes it is very topical to the 1970s, but the thing I like about the show is that the quality of the acting and the professionalism of all the actors on the show was very good. Yes, I liked Ester Rolle a lot more than the Mrs Naugatuck character, but even that character had her funny moments. The funny thing is that I’m an arch-conservative and yet I still like this show. The main reason is that I love Bea Arthur.
