The cancelation comes after talks to move the musical dramedy from NBC to Peacock failed. Lionsgate TV plans to shop Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist to other outlets. “In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following," Lionsgate said in a statement. With delayed viewing factored in, Zoey's Season 2 was down 14% in the all-important 18-49 demo in Season 2. "Lionsgate had been speaking with NBCUniversal about moving the series from its broadcast network NBC to its streaming platform, Peacock," reports The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg. "Both the network and streamer are overseen by the same content group, headed by Susan Rovner and head of scripted Lisa Katz, with the latter having developed the series. Unfortunately, the two sides could not come to terms that would have allowed the pricey series to move to the streamer. Such a move would have required new deals to be completed as things like streaming rights — the series runs on Hulu — likely factored heavily into the discussions." Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist creator Austin Winsberg said last month he was "cautiously optimistic" that either NBC or Peacock would renew Zoey's for Season 3. "I know that we have a really passionate fanbase that really cares about the show," he said. "I know we have a lot of internal support at NBC." ALSO: Winsberg reacts to the cancelation with a Twitter thread saying "right now I refuse to believe the show is dead. There is too much love and goodwill and the fan base is incredible." |

Jane Levy Calls “Wrong Move” on "Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist" Cancellation, Says NBC Favors “Crime and Guns”
by Greg Evans June 14, 2021 Jane Levy, star of NBC’s recently cancelled musical comedy-drama "Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist", says the network’s decision not to renew the series is a “wrong move,” and suggests a show “about love” is much needed in a “crime and guns”-heavy TV line-up. “I’m sorry, but I have to say this: I look at the new NBC lineup, and it’s like, ‘Okay, we could watch a lot of shows about crime and guns,’” Levy told VanityFair.com. “Our show is about love. It’s a real shame to take that off the air. I feel like it’s the wrong move.” https://deadline.com/2021/06/jane-le...ns-1234774908/ |

Jane Levy: I wasn't trashing NBC with comment about its "crime and guns" shows
The Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist star told Vanity Fair of the show's cancelation, “I’m sorry, but I have to say this: I look at the new NBC lineup, and it’s like, ‘Okay, we could watch a lot of shows about crime and guns.’ Our show is about love. It’s a real shame to take that off the air…I feel like it’s the wrong move.” After her comment starting gaining attention, Levy took to Twitter to clarify her comments. "Woah! internet! My comment about NBC making the 'wrong move' was an aside & if you heard me, it was said with a sigh & not to trash," she tweeted. "Also my best friend is on an amazing show that at times includes guns and crime. Ok I’m going to float down a river for 4 days bye. And by float down a river I literally mean I’m gonna float down a river. Not.... die Ok sayonara." Skyler Astin on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist's cancelation: "There was so much story left to tell" "I feel like Pandora's box was opened when Max got the power," says Astin. "It quite literally opens up the story to mash-ups, having Max and Zoey both have the power, they can hear two songs at once, it can do so much to music and that power to music metaphor would have just taken off. I also have a vague idea of where the series was going, so it really feels like unfinished business for me. People talk about how we left them on a cliffhanger, I feel like I've been left on a cliffhanger as an actor." Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist cast options expire, but Lionsgate is exploring options such as a miniseries or movie If Lionsgate does plan to make something new with the Zoey's stars, a new deal would have to be signed since cast options expired on Thursday. |
