What is the story behind Doug Savant leaving the show?

It seemed like a last minute decision. Didn’t it just happen out of the blue with Doug not even appearing in the episode?

Doug's character had an exit scene. It was very dull because no one said goodbye to him. It was like this a lot for the characters. Jake didn't have a goodbye scene with the characters. Jo didn't. Allison had a goodbye scene with Billy. Taylor had a quiet exit. Jane was the only character who had this big send off and it was pointless since she came back the following year.

I think Jo had the worst exit. By the time she left the show, only Matt was still talking to her. They ruined her friendship with Jane and Jake. I don't even think Allison was still Jo's friend. Allison was hanging around Jane majority of season 4. Jo was friends with everyone the first 3 years and then all of a sudden people don't like her anymore. She should have had a better ending.
