Here is the wikipedia link. I seriously cannot believe we are even discussing this. A hit character on a hit tv show gets their own show and people doubt the origins? Strange.

I remember first reading that thread when I was a newcomer at Sitcoms Online and I was like, damn, TVFactFan has kept this argument up THIS long? That was the golden age of Sitcoms Online. I remember another Good Times spinoff argument thread from a couple of years ago and that one was even MORE heated.

This one goes back to 2002, which to cause problems I bumped up in 2015

I am a firm believer that GoodTimes is not spin off Maude. GoodTimes have totaly different background as when Florida was a maid working for Maude.

For example in one episode of GoodTimes, Alderman Davis came over and told James's children how they have grownup and how he remember when he held them in his arms. And how he helped James moved into project. That mean the Evans family have been in Chicago for a long time.

Alderman Davis never did mention NYC or Maude when reminiscence with James about the old times

Folks, it’s a spin-off!!! LOL. Plus, the ad references Florida as Maude’s maid. GAME OVER...for the 179th time!! 😂😂😁

EXCELLENT POINT! I didn't even think of that. Now, that is really more proof that Good Times is NOT a Maude spin-off!

Even if the background of the characters have changed in order to accommodate the new television show, the show is still considered a spin off because of the foundational elements that stemmed from the predecessor. And this is coming from someone who has worked in television for almost 14 years! Everything does not have to lineup bit by bit in order for it to be considered a spin off.

The Alderman does not have to mention New York City. A Spinoff is basically an element or idea from a predecessor that becomes a focus apart from the predecessor. We have a tendency to focus on every, little fact in note and we always think that they have to match up. In actuality, they really don’t.With that being said, the sitcom good times is a spin off. Also, executive producer Norman Lear backs that up.

That's kinda like saying Golden Girls is a spinoff of Mama's Family because both Rue McCallahan and Betty White appeared on the show. Or that Everybody Loves Raymond is a spinoff of Seinfeld because the "Raymond" character appeared on an episode of Seinfeld as a crazed mechanic. How about What's Happening being a spinoff of Sanford & Son because Haywood Nelson appeared on S&S as Grady's grandson? Where does it end

That is because Lear took credit for a show that was created in 1970 lol
