Scarlett (Kyra) in my opinion couldn't have been anymore of a stick figure during the season five opener when Brock is telling her and Jake about smoking. I pray that she is doing better these days.

God bless you and her always!!!

Holly

P.S. When she is shown going to her dad's refrigerator in the only scene that we see her in during that episode, you can see how much she didn't weigh anymore.

I would have preferred they make it serious too and educate viewers on anorexia. I felt Scarlett had nothing for character growth through the series. Her absence is not mention in season 5. They probably didn’t know if she would be back.
So after those 2 episodes in the beginning of the season, she's gone till season 6? I think she would have evolved during season 5 had she not got sick. In season 4 she was starting a band and dating so I think we would've seen more in depth stories of her there.

It's a shame because her character really grew on me as the series progressed. I know season 6 is a very short one since it was cancelled early, so she probably doesn't get to do much in that final one. I too hope she's fully recovered from it and is ok today.

I believe she did ok the jokes, the cast is still very close to this day and wouldn't do anything to make one another feel uncomfortable.

She's very involved in s6 and has some good development

It's nice to know the cast is still close all these years later. I'd love to see a reunion show sometime in the future.

I watched the next 4 episodes tonight:

1. "And God Created Van"---A good episode about faith in God and Van's lack of faith since he lost his football career. It's kind of a serious episode where we learn that even Reba lost her faith there for a while when she & Brock separated which is understandable. Van seems to be going through the same thing which I predict he'll eventually come out of.

It is disturbing how little Elizabeth didn't include him in her family drawing. This clearly shows that she feels a lack of attention from daddy who seems glued to sports on TV. This is something he really should take more seriously, but he apparently doesn't which is a little strange since we know he loves his daughter.

BJ is a little annoying getting openly hot and bothered for the church minister. Didn't she act like this in a past episode with a guy Reba had potential to date? Why she does this I don't know, but it tells me her marriage to Brock is still on shaky ground if she's looking at other men so openly.

I thought this would be the start of a relationship (finally!) for Reba with the minister...but I doubt we'll ever see him again. Reba really needs to have a permanent man in her life at this point and i'd like to see it. Hopefully, it comes in this season or the final one.

2. "No Good Deed"---Oh dear Lord this episode did not age well.

Reba takes in 20 black refugees of Hurricane Katrina and hilarity supposedly ensues. All I did was cringe throughout most of this episode. I think it was even cringeworthy back in 2005 to be honest.

BJ acting "black" and with her hair in cornrows was so cringey and embarrassing. She even says at one point "Is it because we're black?" Ugh. I found none of it funny at all. I liked the serious parts between Reba and I think Ruby was the black lady's name towards the end of the episode and found it touching when she thanked Reba for letting her family stay at her home by pointing out a quote from the bible. It was a nice moment.

Without BJ's buffoonish behavior, this could've been a much better episode about the devastating Hurricane Katrina, which hit less than 2 months before this aired.

3. "Best Lil' Haunted House in Texas"---A really fun Halloween episode. We see a touch of Roseanne here when Reba is shown being a big Halloween prankster like Roseanne is. But just like one of Roseanne's episodes, the tables are turned and the trickster is the trickee....Only Reba doesn't blow up the house in the end.

4. "Have Your Cake"---To cover for Melissa Peterman's obvious late stage pregnancy, the episode focuses on BJ's weight gain and how fat and unattractive she feels. It's a little ironic with the actress who plays Kyra temporarily off the show due to anorexia.
It's an ok episode and Reba was nice to help make BJ feel better about herself at the end.

Of all 4 watched tonight, my favorite was the Halloween one.

Glad to see you enjoyed the Episodes. Yeah Bj flirting with the minister was like Dr Jack Morgan. You’re right we won’t see him again. Best Lil' Haunted House in Texas is a great Ep it’s too bad it’s Rebas only halloween ep.

Watched episodes 8-11 tonight:

"Grannies Gone Wild" --This was my favorite of the bunch tonight. Just as I suspected, flaky Cheyenne doesn't want to be a dentist anymore and wants to go into social work so she can help people.
She explains in a logical and adult way how she's given it a lot of thought and since her bout with alcohol, she wants to help others now. Van on the other hand is all about the money at first and wants her to stick with dentistry so they won't be poor.
But Cheyenne is convincing when she says it's not about making money, and she really wants to help people. Van comes around in the end mainly because he felt left out that she came to this life changing decision without consulting him.....(the same way Van took that Denver job without consulting her lol...so tit for tat there! )

We learn though that Cheyenne's way of helping people is to take a bunch of old ladies at the home and turn them into 80 year old Cheyennes by giving them ridiculous makeovers. This is where I realize she's just being flaky again...and we learn soon just how flaky she is with this new venture.

In the side story, Barbara Jean had to go to jury duty where she annoyed both the judge and me. She just acted like a crazy person and I was glad when the scene was over and she was tossed out of court. Not the best BJ story, but still a solid episode.

"Invasion" ---I guess Melissa Peterson was having her baby since she was MIA in this episode. We got treated instead to her annoying brother who's named "Buzzard" who shows up on the most boring Thanksgiving Day ever at Reba's. And throughout the entire episode no one is seen cooking any dinner in the kitchen yet that frozen turkey Reba brought home in the beginning is thawed and cooked by the end of the show.

"Issues"----Another boring episode. Melissa Peterson is back and still pregnant, so it must have been filmed out of order. She and Brock are having sleep issues and it turns out she's physically abusing him in bed while they're asleep, which incredibly never wakes up Brock no matter how many times she tosses punches on him. He wakes in the mornings wondering why he's so tired. None of it makes any sense and it's all too absurd.
There's a hamster named "Elton" involved that's the cause of the nighttime abuse and in the end Brock takes the animal and flushes it down the toilet. WTF?! Animal abuse is NEVER funny and it completely turned me off. Ugh.

Meanwhile, Reba & Van are bickering at work. We learn that Reba works at a realtor office and has a boss. But I thought she was an independent realtor because she hired Van to assist her. Wouldn't she have to have her boss hire him?!
Anyway, their bickering is causing tension to coworkers in the office who have no lines so we never actually see how irritated they are lol. They're all just background extras...
But we have that annoying guy from "Mad About You" playing a psychologist who comes to the office to help. He suggests Reba and Van switch workloads, to Reba's horror because she thinks he's not experienced enough to handle more than small tasks.
Isn't Reba new to this herself?! While I understand Van isn't too experienced to handle much, but Reba's cavalier attitude to his feelings of not feeling appreciated were kind of off putting. At one point she actually mocks him while playing an imaginary violin as he's airing his feelings. Not nice Reba!
The end scene where the house was robbed during a showing was too unrealistic to be funny. It would never happen lol. So it fell flat. Not a favorite episode especially for that hamster killing.

"Brock's Got Stones" ---Brock has kidney stones and it brought back memories of my experience with it a few years ago making the whole story uncomfortable to watch. It's the worst pain ever and 2 days of sheer torture!! Brock is in pain and Reba takes care of him since BJ is away (probably nursing her baby since her baby bump seems to be gone) She makes a small appearance at the beginning and end though.

Brock passes his stone, but enjoys that Reba is caring for him in a friendly way rather than always insulting him normally that he fakes still being in pain to extend things. Reba finds out and they have a nice talk which was the only part of the episode I liked.

Reba asks why they can't just move forward and be friends?...And right on cue in walks BJ.

Meanwhile, Cheyenne is upset because her volunteer work at a homeless shelter has her doing dishes rather than show everyone at the shelter how wonderful she is. Here's her flakiness again....she wants to volunteer and help people, but doesn't want to get her hands dirty. She's so delusional and doesn't seem to know what the heck she wants.

I bet if we peeked into Reba in 2020, we'd see her still living home and working as a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly.

It's an ok episode but i'm missing Kyra and can't wait for her to come back. There's one funny scene at the end when the homeless guy from the shelter rings Reba's door and announces to her that he won her house in a poker game. He doesn't say anything else, but we all know it's because of Van.

Hopefully things pick up more in the mid season episodes i'll watch tomorrow.

Aww I liked that part, it was pure hilarity.

The way she just ripped the number off the juror next to her when that number was called so she can get on the jury was a little shocking. The woman just sat there instead of slapping her silly. BJ was a little more crazy than usual in this one. Just for taking that woman's number she would've been tossed out of the court...or worse maybe locked up too.

I though my appendix burst or something. The pain is absolutely excruciating and I went to the ER. Took about 2 days to pass it and even the vicodin the doc gave me did nothing for the pain. When Brock was doubled over in pain, I cringed lol. I hope to never have that again!

I can't remember specifics now, but I think when she originally wanted to go into dentistry, she made her parents pay the extra funds for it and it cost Kyra her school semester in Europe.

Now here she is dropping the whole thing! Poor Kyra when she learns about that! Too bad her character wasn't here for this because it would've been good scenes to watch.

Cheyenne is clearly showing a flighty pattern of not sticking to things, so I think by today she'd be in a dead end job like Becky turned out to have in Roseanne. I think she'd be divorced from Van and still leeching off Reba.

No in season 2 Cheyenne had no major and was dropping so many classes she didn't realize she wouldn't be a full-time student, (something the college should've told her but whatever....) She decided to be a dentist in early season 3 after they told her she had to decide a major. I was a liberal arts major and they didn't make us pick an actual major til the end of year two.

Cheyenne decided because of her alcoholism to do a more meaningful career to her. Her goal is to be a drug and alcohol counselor and is starting to volunteer at the homeless shelter.

If that was early season 3 when she decided to go into dentistry, that means she spent 2 years of college on dentistry classes that she's never going to use. It seems such a huge waste after investing all that time and money on it. I get that she wants to help people, but she was this gung ho about dentistry too so her personality shows me that after a couple of years of this she'll be bored and want to be an astronaut or something.

And who the hell is taking care of Elizabeth with Reba & Van working f/t and Cheyenne in school and volunteer work? Are we to believe that maid Conseula is still there? (I forgot her name, but when I think of tv maids I think of Suzanne Sugarbaker's never seen maid Conseula )

Anyway, this is why I say that 15 years later we'd still see Cheyenne bouncing from job to job because she's so fickle and flighty.

"Parenting with Puppets"---Good episode. Reba & BJ fight about disciplining BJ's son Henry who's gotten really big. He looks almost 5 already! Maybe because i'm watching so quick it's startling to see him so big already and I forget 4 years have gone by since it began.

Their fight is weird because BJ is the one bringing her kid there unannounced and uninvited and gets all offended when Reba punishes him. Reba does point this out to BJ who stands there all shocked by it. This woman is so damn dense...I don't know how on earth Reba puts up with her crap sometimes!

A lamp is broken and Reba disciplines Henry for breaking it which sends BJ through the roof and a fed up Reba opens the front door and tells her to "Get Out!" Yay Reba!!

But.....oops!....It turns out that her own kid Jake actually broke the lamp and now Reba has some apologizing to do.

The side story is Brock and Van going to a man spa because Brock likes stuff like this. But he has to pull teeth to get Van to go...who winds up enjoying the experience until the male gay masseuse starts bawling at what a wonderful couple Brock & Van are. Funny stuff...and I liked Van making fun of Brock's name saying it sounds like a parrot warning. "BRAWK!"

"Don't Mess with Taxes" ---An ok 2 parter where we learn that Brock and Reba are being audited from when they were married and learn they both owe the IRS a whopping $75,000! Yikes! And the side story is Van going to Cheyenne's class where the females all fawn over him irking Cheyenne.

Oh and BJ gets really uncomfortably creepy when talking about the tax audit and how she'll be Reba's girlfriend in prison. Why does she say these weird things?! Reba even told her to stop creeping her out. I'm beginning to wonder if BJ's obsession with Reba is taking a dark turn.

"The Goodbye Guy"---Part 2 of the audit where Brock decides to sell his house and head to Las Vegas with BJ and Henry to Reba's incredible delight and joy lol.
But BJ isn't having any of that because she knows deep in her twisted heart that her best friend, wannabe prison girlfriend, and creepy obsession loves her too much to let her go and will stop Brock from selling the house.

Reba actually does convince him not to sell, but because of Jake needing his father close and not BJ who thinks it's all about her when she finds out Brock changed his mind. This woman is starting to scare me...and Reba should be afraid too because the woman climbed her home to the second floor to creep inside her bedroom window at 2am because she thought it rude to ring the bell at that time. She's freaking psycho!

I think Brock decided to take on the whole 75k debt himself leaving Reba off the hook in the end?

"Money Blues"----Oh boy did this one irritate me! Cheyenne wants to do some frivolous shopping and asks Van for some cash before he leaves for work in the morning. He gives her a wad of bills and she happily trots off to the mall to buy shoes and stuff.

Reba sees Van give her the money and gets involved saying Van shouldn't be the one in control of the money and the marriage should be equal when it comes to finances.

Van says that since he's the one working, it's his money. He's correct, up to a point. Yes he earned the money, but when you're married, it's all jointly owned money.

So Van IMO does the right thing and puts Cheyenne on a weekly allowance which deeply offends her. I wonder to myself, how this is offensive to her when asking him for cash isn't?! Isn't it the same thing?!

With a weekly allowance, she doesn't have to ask him for money. Besides, Ricky did it with Lucy and they got along wonderfully! (Yes I know it was the 1950's...but it worked! )

In any case, the best solution and realistic one is for them to have a joint checking account each with their own debit card to use freely. In real life this would be the case.

But an allowance to me isn't offensive because he's giving her enough funds for what she needs for Elizabeth, shopping etc. I don't see anything wrong or demeaning about it but Cheyenne feels he's "putting a price" on her. Whatever.

The most logical thing to do is for the both of them to sit down and make a weekly or monthly budget together to decide where the money goes. And an allowance for her as well as him is naturally part of that. Hell, i'm single and do that myself each month.

I give myself X amount of money as an allowance after the bills/utilities are paid. Maybe i'm demeaning myself though.

It was all so silly and just showed how these two are still incredibly immature even after 4 years of marriage. And didn't they already have this financial discussion when Van was raking in the money with football?

They decided then what should go where and how to spend/save after Van bought Rhonda the car.

Oh and speaking of Rhonda...when Reba found out she was in for half that 75k taxes owed, she told Van he had to sell the car. WTF?! Why on earth should he have to do that to pay her taxes?! I found that incredibly selfish of her to say that.
Van offering is one thing, but for Reba to just say "sell your car" was really out of line. It didn't look like she was joking either.

There was a side story where Jake was selling cans of soda to his classmates because his school banned soda. But he was only doing it because he overheard everyone in the house talking about money problems and wanted to help out. Aww....but how the hell was he buying all those cans of soda to sell in the first place?!

Still missing Kyra....it's odd how no one even mentions her whereabouts and like she never even existed. I can't wait till she returns though.

Haha these are some great reviews Cfr! The allowance offended Cheyenne because he was basically treating her like a kid and not his equal partner. It’s not like cheyenne is a housewife, she’s still in school working on her degree.

I do wonder if kyra were on this season if they would’ve had a storyline about her parents wanting her moving back in with Reba since Brock was planning to move away.

When this happened, they weren't sure if she would be back. There was the possibility of pulling a Judy from Family Matters and act as if she never existed in the first place. Luckily though, Scarlett made a full recovery to come back the last season.

Are you at season 6 yet? I'm curious to see your opinion on the final season.

I don’t believe that was the case. They knew Scarlett was recovering by episode 10 as she was at the 100th Ep celebration party, but they wanted her to take the rest of the season off for her health. They still referenced Kyra in episodes, notably the thanksgiving Ep, brocks got stones, and bj saying she had three tickets in St. Louis was obviously for herself, Henry, and Kyra.

3 episodes tonight:

"The Trouble with Dr. Hunky" ---Ugh, it's Desperate Housewives guy back again. This was filmed in 2006 when he was doing that show, so why couldn't they hire an out of work actor who needed the money instead of this guy hogging up all the TV parts? Can you tell I don't care for this actor?

The good news is he's married and we'll never see him again. Hooray! It was a good story showing Reba on the other side of the fence and playing the part of Barbara Jean which horrified her.

And once again Barbara Jean openly lusts after this guy right in front of him and Reba, Van and Cheyenne....what the hell is wrong with her?! It's not funny to me, but major psycho behavior. It's times like this that I despise her. And to make it even worse, this is another guy that Reba's with that it makes you wonder if she's purposely targeting the men in her life. It's sick!

Still a good episode though. And Cheyenne popping out of the chest was pretty funny.

"Reba the Landlord"---I have to be honest and say I didn't understand ANY of this. Why on earth would Reba buy Brock & Barbara Jean's house so they can remain there and pay her rent?! NO ONE in their right mind would do such a thing.

She's basically taking out a whole 30 year MORTGAGE for these two and allowing them to pay her back in rent. I doubt she had the funds to buy that house outright. It just makes no sense that anyone would do this.

Why couldn't Brock & BJ just get a nice apartment or condo close by? He's still a successful dentist and most likely making enough money. I just didn't understand the whole thing so when they got to the story about Reba being their landlord, I just couldn't get into it because I kept wondering throughout the whole episode why Reba would do this...and HOW could she?

What bank would give a 30 year mortgage to her, especially since she's most likely still paying on her first house? Well, maybe Brock is, but still....I can't see her successfully getting a mortgage for this situation. And in real life there would be lawyers drawing up those leases for Brock & BJ.

It was all so unbelievable that I just couldn't get into it.

"The Blond Leading the Blind" ---Reba suddenly needs glasses to drive. (she never did before) so after she sideswipes Van's car "Rhonda", she goes to have laser surgery to correct her vision. (It didn't help that I watched this right after seeing Final Destination 5 where a girl's eye is hideously lasered during her death scene )

Hilarity ensues when Reba has to wear dark glasses and is blind until her eyes heal. The kitchen scene was funny with BJ hiding while Reba tried to make a sandwich.
Reba insults BJ thinking she's talking to Cheyenne but it's BJ standing there to a blind Reba and listening and runs off hurt. And they have their umpteenth scene where they make up and Reba once again grudgingly tells BJ how much she cares for her. We've seen this before so it feels like a rehash.

Still an ok episode, but i'm glad there's only 4 episodes to watch tomorrow before starting season 6 next week. I want Kyra back already!!
