I like drama, but I think this is too much drama for a lighthearted comedy. I already miss the fun episodes and hope they resolve Brock & BJ's separation quickly.

Since you've gotten this far into the series, have you noticed that this show is rarely about Reba? It's always about the kids or Brock and BJ. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. I think this is one of the reasons the show was a success unlike Bette. Reba wasn't an attention hog needing everything about her for every episode. Bette on the other hand had every episode about her and her fame. It was a diva sitcom. Reba knew to share the spotlight and just be the matriarch in the series for everyone's problems. It's an ensemble cast show rather than just a one star show with a supporting cast. It's a shame The CW didn't want the show because I don't think season 6 was planned to be that way when season 5 ended. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Did you ever watch Bette? I came across it again a while ago. It was done so much different than how Reba did her sitcom. Every episode had Bette as the star and no one else mattered. After 12 episodes, they had to replace the guy playing her husband. I guess he got tired of the drama behind scenes because Bette went on Rosie after the show was canceled that first season and told her never do a sitcom. I'm glad Reba made her show a family centered show. It turned out a lot better than what Bette did. Plus they had more material to work with on Reba making it a family show. If Bette had not been canceled, they would have dried up quickly on what to do next because you can only do so many diva episodes before fans turn off. Apparently 16 was the cut off number since that's how long it took to get canceled

I watched the first 7 episodes of season 4 last weekend. The last episode I saw was "All Fore One" where Brock finally let go of the silly golf dream and is going back to being a dentist.

And Van is commuting back and forth from Denver to play football while Cheyenne and the baby stay home which I don't understand....I mean I understand it...it's just a weird story line because Denver to Houston back and forth is pretty far to do on a regular basis.

I'm just happy the lighthearted comedy is back and it's past all that breakup fighting between Brock & BJ. I watch the next 8 episodes this weekend. I do 4 Saturday and 4 Sunday.

I've noticed that Reba closely follows the outline for Seinfeld where she's the straight character among a bunch of flaky characters and that's a premise that usually works imo.

I watched Bette when it aired but my memory is very hazy on the details. I think Bette was going for a Lucy type sitcom where each episode was all about her and her wild shenanigans. What worked for Lucy just didn't carry over for Bette and fell flat.

I can't really say what made Bette fail without giving it another look, but Reba succeeds because she's a solid and believable character among all the wacky ones. That reins things in and gives the show a base that the audience can relate to.

I think when the star is the crazy wacky one, it usually doesn't work because the audience can't relate with that. I think Lucy is the one exception. This is why the wacky ones are usually relegated as the co stars and side characters.

One example is the show 227 where Jackee played the flaky Sandra who was hysterical for years as the co star neighbor...but she flopped miserably when they tried spinning her of with her own show.

I think Bette was too out there and unrelatable for audiences to warm up to her. And I think if Reba was the crazy, wacky character the show probably wouldn't have lasted past the first season.

It's like Van & Cheyenne...they're both so flaky that they'd never survive as stars of their own show. You need to have the star as the straight, relatable character and surround them with nutcases like that and you have potential for a hit show.

I'm really enjoying Reba, the only slump was the breakup with Brock & BJ, but that was thankfully over quick and seemed like it was just used as a season 3 to season 4 cliffhanger and things are getting back on track now.

4 more episodes tonight and I liked them all.

1. Hello, I Must Be Going ---A good one where Kyra feels her Dad hates her because he's always fighting with BJ when she's there and when she says she wants to move back with Reba he doesn't try stopping her which only reinforces her feelings that he doesn't want her there. I think Kyra is my favorite character behind Reba and it's weird because I didn't like her too much when I first started watching because she seemed too much like a Darlene from Roseanne clone. But over the seasons she's successfully veered away from that and became her own character and does some growing...unlike Darlene who never did.

Van lying about being called back to Denver early because Cheyenne was filling up his time when he just wanted to rest was funny.

2. "Thanksgiving"---Another good one where Reba wanted to hog Thanksgiving with the family all to herself. I felt bad for BJ especially after she revealed why she wanted to host that Thanksgiving with the family at her house.
Before she revealed it, I did wonder why Reba was being so bitchy about it since she gets all the Thanksgivings---why not give ONE to BJ? It's been 3 years now since she married her ex and she's already accepted her as part of the family and I thought Reba could've reneged to be a sport.
She did understand after BJ told her why she wanted it so that was good, but I wish Reba could've been more open to share the holiday. What she said at the very end when saying grace about the gravy (BJ) was nice.

3. "No Boys Upstairs"---Kyra has a Muppet for a boyfriend that Reba doesn't feel comfortable having stay at the house alone with her. The whole scene was weird and unrealistic.
No boyfriend would be that disrespectful towards their girlfriends mother. My God you couldn't even see his face! And he didn't speak. GMAB! Kyra would've made fun of that---not fawn all over it. It was all so bizarre.
I liked Cheyenne visiting Van's apartment in Denver which looked just fine before Cheyenne redecorated it when he was out.
What the hell did she do? Go on a shopping spree for all that stuff?! It was strange that she would do that since she doesn't even live there....why bother?! And she really did ugly it up with those pillows and candles.

4. "Diamond Jim Brady"---So this is how they being Van back from Denver. They give him Spinal Stenosis. Yikes! From what i've read about it, it's a serious affliction and very debilitating. Couldn't they just have him break his legs or something?
Well, he did fracture his tailbone...and I didn't understand why everyone was laughing at that. It all came off so juvenile to me. Just because the injury is on his backside doesn't make it funny imo. An injury is still serious---especially a bone fracture.
Then he gets rich with a $100k settlement since docs didn't find the Stenosis on his original physical and he goes on a crazy spending spree. I cringed at that whole thing because when I was his age, I came into that much money and stupidly did the same thing.
People in their 20's should never be handed that much money so easily. I kept yelling at the TV "BUY A HOUSE!! You'll thank yourself in 20 years!!"

When he walked in wearing that hideous white fur coat was funny though. And in the end Reba talked sense into him to take the stuff back. But I didn't understand when she said 50k was going to taxes...I guess a settlement is considered earned income that the government gets a share of?

When I got my big windfall it was an inheritance and I don't recall Uncle Sam taking any of it. I guess settlements have different rules.

All great episodes though and i'm looking forward to what happens next. Hopefully he doesn't blow the rest of it---but as mentioned before, I know Cheyenne develops an alcohol dependency from glancing at Wikipedia so I wonder if this is what triggers it. (BUT NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!!!

I get why Cheyanne planned so much for whenever Van was home from Denver, but in my opinion, it only went to show how inconsiderate she truly was. She should've just been glad that he was home when she never wanted him to leave in the first place and just let him decide what he wanted to do while there with her and Elizabeth. When you love a person enough, what you are doing with them shouldn't matter so much. Instead, just be happy that you are there with them at all.

Now when Cheyanne went to Denver, it was nice to see her accept his being there, but to me, what Van pointed out to her at the end couldn't have been anymore awesome.....okay now I am starting to remember the look on his face later on when he realizes that Cheyanne has started drinking.....have you gotten to the episode yet when Reba finds Cheyanne at the Karaoke place?

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. To me, if anyone had a reason to go to that bottle, it was Van when he is the one who ends up having to look for a new way of life for himself and his family. What Reba says to Cheyanne at that club couldn't have been better put.

I haven't got to the episode at the Karaoke place yet. It's probably coming up soon, but please don't tell any more since I don't want to be spoiled.

I agree Cheyenne was wrong to fill up Van's time with all those activities when he was home from Denver, but it was also Van's fault for just not saying "I'm tired" and explaining things to her. I think had she known, she would've backed off...not completely, but a little because she does seem a bit pushy and naggy.

I also liked when he told her that the picture of Cheyenne and the baby on the wall was all the apartment needed. I guess we won't be seeing the apartment anymore anyway now that he's off the team. I thought it was a cute little place before Cheyenne uglied it up with all that crap.

Agreed he never said no, he went along with it. He also left Cheyenne in the cold in the first place, he never talked going to Denver over with her, he decided everything and told Cheyenne what he’s doing and left and that’s why she was upset
