TV Amazon Cancels "One Mississippi"

"One Mississippi", "I Love Dick" & "Jean-Claude Van Johnson" Canceled at Amazon
by Dominic Patten and Nellie Andreeva
January 17, 2018

Amazon is doing more clearing the decks with the cancellation of three comedy series: Tig Notaro’s "One Mississippi", Jill Soloway’s "I Love Dick" and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s "Jean-Claude Van Johnson".

"One Mississippi" was canceled after two seasons, while "I Love Dick" and "Jean-Claude Van Johnson" were axed after one each. “This is part of a move towards bigger, wider-audience series,” an Amazon insider told Deadline.

Why Amazon made a “terrible decision” in canceling Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi

It is bad optics for Amazon, after having several ties to the recent sexual misconduct scandals, to cancel this particular female-led show, says Alan Sepinwall, pointing out that One Mississippi is a very cheap show to make. “Costs almost nothing, pays huge dividends for the brand, maybe even brings new eyeballs to the show. Easy,” he says, adding: “This was a great show that still felt like it had a lot of story to tell, and one of the advantages of this weird, overflowing era in TV is that great shows tend to be allowed to run as long as they want, or at least get to end at a point mutually negotiated between creator and distributor.”

One Mississippi was a rare opportunity to see a viewpoint never shown before on television
“Much of television would have you believe gay people only exist in major cities, if they exist at all, and that the only legitimate way to portray queerness is in a marriage complete with kids,” says Ann-Derrick Gaillot of the canceled Amazon series loosely based on Tig Notaro’s life. “Not only that, but shows about women above the age of 30, let alone queer women, are few and far between. Amazon is the only place I knew of to find a show about a middle-aged, queer, woman living and dating in the South. Unless another network picks up the show, everything that One Mississippi offers will be stunted at two good seasons until another studio bigwig decides to give an artist with a new story an opportunity few of them get with ease: a show that will draw viewers and make the company look just a bit less like the soulless corporation it is.”

Tig Notaro was "excited" Amazon canceled One Mississippi so she could move on from Louis CK

Notaro tells The Last Laugh podcast there was a "part of me that felt like there was an element of negativity that was tied to the show through a particular producer," according to Indiewire. Notaro, who was reluctant to mention the disgraced comedian's name, added that "a part of me was excited to just get the word that okay, it’s been canceled and be like, all right, let’s shut that chapter, I’m ready to move on in life.”
