I always thought it was the San Francisco Bay Area, but I read somewhere that they were originally going to use Long Island in New York state as the home base before they went with "Anytown, USA".

Default We Tumblforya: Film Locations Then and Now

http://www.complex.com/art-design/20...s-then-and-now

As a part of an ongoing art project, Christopher Moloney visits the locations of key scenes from popular movies, matching them with screenshots from the films for FILMography. The juxtaposition is interesting as some places have changed significantly and others haven't at all. This blog takes fandom to the next level, but its up to you to source the wardrobe if you want to go for a full reenactment.

It's mention on Wikipedia that it was never supposed to be set in a particular location though original the creators who were from Long Island that locale in mind but ABC didn't want them to have a place in mind thought the outside of the house and hills in the background it sure looked like the L.A. area though it was never specified.

Kevin wore a NY Jets jacket so I always thought New York or at least on the east coast. On the other hand, Joe Namath was super popular at the time so Kevin could have been like all those kids all over the country that wore Chicago Bulls stuff in the 90s due to Jordan's popularity.

In Family Car from season 3, you can see a California license plate on the front of the station wagon. When Jack is under the car, there is a close up where you can make out the numbers on the plate! I guess somebody didn't think to remove the plate to film the scene.

I'm pretty sure it was the San Fernando Valley , an LA suburb ! The American dream in the 1960's and 70's !

The Arnold house exists at 516 University Avenue in Burbank, California, which is in the L. A. area, so yes!
