Okay, how about this: There is no comedy-hour reduction, and neither The Goldbergs nor Black-ish end (their series finales will have to wait until 2022)? That would mean ABC Network ordering three new comedies for 2020-21.

It doesn't matter what you think about the Goldbergs or not, it boils down to ratings (and to a lesser extent things like ratings decline, etc). This article is speculation and so many variables, such as less pilots, or more shows at midseason.

If not enough comedy pilots are produced, there's a chance of this comedy-hour reduction becoming real when ABC announces their fall and midseason schedules. ABC may wait until 2020-21 to go back to four comedy hours.

The article stated that one of the hours vacated by sitcoms would go to "alternative programming". But what if that "alternative programming" is successful enough that ABC's comedy hours will stay at three in 2021-22?

I don't doubt they will reduce the hours, I just don't think the Goldbergs will be one of them. Yes, it's now the oldest comedy on ABC but ABC has a lot of low rated sitcoms (not the Goldbergs).
