The Netflix space comedy created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell has been given a nearly three-minute teaser ahead of its May 29 debut. Netflix pitched the idea for Space Force to Steve Carell, who pitched it to Greg Daniels Carell says his upcoming space comedy came about in an "atypical way." “Netflix had this premise that they thought might make a funny show — the idea made everybody laugh in a meeting, an idea of a show about the origins of a fictitious Space Force," he tells Deadline. "I heard about the idea through my agent, and Netflix pitched the show to me, and then I pitched the show to Greg, and we all had the same reaction to it. There was no show, there was no idea aside from the title. Netflix asked, ‘Do you want to do a show called Space Force?’ And I pretty much immediately said, ‘Well yeah, sure. That sounds great.’ And then I called Greg, and I said, 'Hey, you want to do a show called Space Force?' And he said, 'Yeah, that sounds good. Let’s do it.' And it was really based on nothing, except this name that made everybody laugh. So we were off and running." Real-life head of the U.S. Space Force would like Steve Carell to get a haircut for Netflix's Space Force Gen. Jay Raymond, the U.S. Space Force's chief of space operations and the real-world equivalent to Carell's character, has one complaint about the Netflix series so far. "The one piece of advice I'd give Steve Carell is to get a haircut," joked Raymond, who is bald. "He's looking a little too shaggy if he wants to play the Space Force chief." Space Force drops its official trailer, reveals plans for a behind-the-scenes podcast In addition to dropping the Space Force trailer, Netflix announced a podcast titled Inside Joke that will premiere along with the comedy on May 29. Fred Willard received a standing ovation on the set of Space Force after improvising a five-minute story "I had the wonderful experience of being on the set when he did his first work for us in the first episode, and we had written something very funny for him, I thought, and he did it brilliantly," says Space Force co-creator Greg Daniels. "And then he's a legendary improviser so at the end of it, we said, ‘Why don’t you just do whatever you want?' And he went into this five-minute, incredibly funny story about crawling under the house, which you know we used completely as is in the show....When he was done, the crew gave him a standing ovation, which I've never seen that happen before, but everybody knew how special the work was that he was doing. And he was 86 years old, so people were just so impressed. So if there's any consolation, I guess it was that his work was the highlight of the show and it was really good." |
