The Young and Restless star Greg Rikaart tests positive for coronavirus

The longtime star on the CBS daytime soap opera announced his diagnosis this afternoon in an Instagram post. "I just tested positive for coronavirus," he wrote. "I am a pretty healthy 43-year-old who doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink much, eats well and exercises regularly and this has been the hardest experience of my life. Two+ weeks ago, everyone in my house had a bit of a cough and my son came home from school with a high fever. Everyone recovered, but I deteriorated. I isolated from my family and have been in solo quarantine since Saturday the 14th. I had a fever for 11 days, difficulty breathing and was diagnosed with pneumonia. I’m confident that I have finally turned the proverbial corner and am fever free today for the first time since this all started. I was told to stay isolated for another 72 hours before I acclimate back into my family. So, nice try coronavirus, but I have another 4-5 decades worth of experiences to have with these guys."

The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful will air theme weeks after running out of new episodes this week

The two CBS soap operas will air their last original episodes before the coronavirus shutdown on Thursday. As a backup plan CBS plans to air theme weeks featuring vintage episodes that date back as early as 1990.

I have been concerned about the effects of this pandemic on soaps. The medium has been on shaky ground for well over a decade, and past big events such as the OJ Simpson trial and September 11 have had negative effects on soaps, eroding viewership. Hopefully, the shows can come out of all this, whenever that might be...

When I check my cable guide to see what episodes are airing, all I see is just the description of the show and the current season. Not the years and seasons.

Both the OJ Simpson trial and the tragic events of September 11 pre-empted daytime programming for extended periods of time. Many of the programs, especially soap operas, never gained the viewership lost back again once programming returned to normal.

My CBS affiliate has been pre-empting this every day in order to show the governor talking about coronavirus updates.

They eventually do show it, but not much of it gets shown.

The Bold and the Beautiful eyes resuming production in June

The CBS soap could become the first scripted U.S. series to restart production in wake of the coronavirus crisis. (Earlier this week, Tyler Perry announced plans to film Sistas and The Oval in July.) "I hear the soap’s cast and crew this week received a new memo, informing them that The Bold and the Beautiful production company is currently getting ready to resume production in June," reports Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "Sources stressed that this is just a projected start date and, while the producers are making preparations, the situation remains fluid. Official safety protocols endorsed by the Hollywood unions, as well as guidelines set by CBS Television City, where the series is shot, the city of Los Angeles and the state of California need to be in place for any filming plans to move forward."

With many shows with past seasons I would think the broadcaster would air the old shows hoping to catch people who haven't see the show.

The Young and the Restless' production restart delayed by one week

The CBS daytime soap had been planning to return to work on Monday following the coronavirus shutdown. Y&R now plans to resume production July 13 amid the recent coronavirus spike.
