After rumors of a wrap-up movie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will return in 2020 to follow-up on its four-season run with an interactive special in the vein of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Tina Fey announced the news Wednesday night at Netflix's Emmy For Your Consideration event for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. "We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new Interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020,” Fey said. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.” |

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt teases its interactive Netflix special
Netflix announced that the interactive special, titled Kimmy vs. the Reverend, will be released on May 12. “Kimmy Schmidt sets off on her biggest adventure yet," Netflix says of the special. "Three states! Explosions! A dancing hamburger! And you, the viewer, get to decide how the story goes. Will you foil the Reverend’s evil plan and get Kimmy to her wedding on time? Or will you accidentally start a war against the robots? So grab your remote and a tray of delicious scrod, ‘cause Kimmy’s got her own Netflix interactive special!” Netflix unveils the trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend Ellie Kemper's Kimmy will take on her kidnapper, Jon Hamm's Rev. Richard Wayne, in the May 12 interactive special. How to watch every ending for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's interactive special How many ways can choose-your-own adventure episode Kimmy vs. The Reverend play out? Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's interactive special is a joke-driven joy to watch "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was Netflix’s first high-profile foray into the world of interactive storytelling, but while it was notable for its format, it wasn’t all that much fun to watch," says Jen Chaney. "The various narrative paths laid out in this tale about a video-game developer attempting to adapt a choose-your-own-adventure novel inevitably led to bleak conclusions. The approach brought some novelty to the streaming experience, but not much joy." Chaney adds: "Because Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a comedy, and one that has consistently embraced the absurd at that, there is no pressure on the movie to come up with plot points and resolutions that stand up to rules of logic. Much of Kimmy vs. the Reverend makes no sense at all, which is just fine, though I will say that the ultimate ending does bring the series full circle in a more satisfying way than the series finale did. While the movie takes full advantage of its interactive approach, it is not shy about making fun of the format at the same time. Like Bandersnatch, it gets meta at times. Unlike Bandersnatch, it doesn’t care if you think its metaness, or anything else about it, is clever." ALSO:
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was ahead of its time, so it has exactly the right spirit for 2020 The return this week of Kimmy Schmidt for its Kimmy vs. the Reverend interactive special is a reminder of how much the comedy from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock anticipated our current moment. "Unbreakable was ahead of its time in several key ways," says Sady Doyle. "Its focus on stark class divisions came before the populist turn in modern progressive politics. Its New York was a place where women, queer folks, and people of color were forced into unlivable apartments and humiliating, sub-minimum-wage jobs servicing the craven rich. Years before #MeToo, it was a show about surviving sexual assault (Kimmy admits to, and was clearly scarred by, 'sex stuff' in the bunker) which never flinched from its depiction of the elite as a cadre of profoundly depraved, wealthy men; just about every character on the show, from trophy wife Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) to aspiring actor Titus (Tituss Burgess), was reduced to a sexual commodity at some point. Kimmy’s demented optimism held the whole thing together: The world is awful, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt told us, and it is run by awful people, and they will break you if they can. That makes it all the more important to strive for joy." ALSO:
