A main character can be put into a new setting which can be called a spinoff (i.e.
"Billy"/"Head of the Class"). "Spinoff" does not limit itself to supporting characters. Some fail to see that. Three's company's last episode was a finale Solomon. Janet got married, Terri moved to Hawaii and Jack moved in with Vicky which was a link to Three's A Crowd. So the last episode was a finale and a transition. Not one or the other. "Crowd" is deemed as a spinoff though. In my opinion, it does seem like a revamped conitnuation though. It is like a revamped, black sheep season nine with major changes. Archie Bunker's Place is the same thing. If I were running a station that ran All in the family, I would air Archie Bunker's Place after season nine of AITF.

Since Jack was the clear star of Three's Company that's enough for a spin-off. Plus Larry did make an appearance.

It depends on your definition of "spinoff" but everywhere I've seen Three's a Crowd described it was as a spinoff.

Even the E! True Hollywood story on Three's Company called it a spinoff. Even John Ritter HIMSELF called it a spinoff!

I've never heard it called a revamp till you said that so you're kind of alone on an island buddy.

I wouldn't debate anyone who wanted to call it a spinoff but it's really is a follow-along or companion series to the original. Archie Bunker's Place, Mayberry RFD are additional examples.

Since the Bistro was part of TC along with the star Jack Tripper, I always called it season 8 of TC
