Default TV Debate, Is Three's a Crowd a REVAMP or a Spinoff?

Three's a Crowd to me was always a revamp because the jack tripper character who was the main character was still involved and was in a new situation kind of like Archie Bunkers Place.

what do you think?

I think it was more of a continuation, but that's just my opinion.

That's exactly why I said "continuation".

I guess you can say it was both because the central character was still involved and his situation was changed. So I will say Revamp/Continuation

This one I'm not sure about. I believe that "Archie Bunker's Place" is a Revamp/Continuation of "All in the Family." And I feel that "Mayberry R.F.D." is a Revamp/Continuation of "The Andy Griffith Show." Because I feel that if the series was titled "The Mayberry Show" all the way back in 1960, when Andy Griffith left in '68, it would have continued as it did... with Ken Berry taking over for Griffith. So there it's really just a title change to accommodate an exiting star.

In the case of "Three's a Crowd", I'm stumped. I mean it seems silly to spin-off the main character of a show, by just dumping the rest of the cast and adding some new cast members (and changing apartments). To me, a spin-off is taking a supporting character and giving them their own show. What's the point of spinning off the main character? They already *have* their own show?

So I guess I'm saying I feel that "Three's a Crowd" is a Revamp/Continuation of "Three's Company." It's like TC's last season, just without Janet, Terri, Mr. Furley and Larry.

I'm sure in the producer's minds and even the network's that it was a spin-off, though. But then again there was a time when movies were rated PG to R, with no PG-13 rating.

This is just a question of semantics-- a sequel/continuation is just a variation on the spinoff. too bad the syndicators don't see the sequel series as worthy of syndicating with the parent series in one package--you don't see ABP following All in the Family, or Mayberry RFD with TAGS or 3's A Crowd with 3's Co.

(and before some wiseacre pipes in, yes, I know that Mayberry RFD is owned by Time Warner while TAGS is CBS/Paramount).

Exactly Adam, the Central Character was still on the show in the same city and still had his Bistro which means it was season 9 of Three's Company without his friends and Landlord
