Remembering Donald Trump's TV Appearances: The Nanny
"The Nanny" (1996)
Trump channeled his business leader self when he appeared on comedic TV series "The Nanny" in 1996. He picked up his phone and told the caller, "I told you not to call me on this line again!" http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lis...-cameos-873556 |

Am I the only one who sees a resemblance between Trump and Daniel Davis? I thought that when I watched clips of the show with Niles (I don't have the DVDs, I've only seen it on Youtube), and wondered if I was crazy, but seeing the picture of both of them reinforces it.
And, am I the only one who thinks a lot of the things Trump said about his opponents, especially the female ones, were a lot like Niles' jabs at C.C.? (And Lauren Lane doesn't really look like HRC, but well, somewhat.) I read one satirical thing that said Trump's taunts at HRC were like a very young boy (maybe they said even younger than "adolescent") taunting the girl he likes... |

I was doing a binge watch of seasons 4 and 5. His appearance was hysterically funny. Marla would show up a year later. Interesting handling but by season 5 and the decision to get Fran and Max together as an item - season 5 almost felt like it was meant to be the final season. Then they do the cliffhanger where we can't see the sharks they're jumping over.

I hated the way they used Marla, too. Nothing against Marla - but I didn't like the sudden revelation that Max had pretty much a one-night stand with her. I think that was implied by CC's line "Max hasn't spent every night of the last five years doing a one-man show" - I think that translated as "Max hasn't been celibate for five years." And by Marla's saying, "the night we..." and then Max cutting her off.
Before that, Max seemed like he was scared of all kind of relationships with women, not into casual flings without commitment. He even tells Fran a couple of times (before he commits) that they can't get too physical because "it's a very serious step." Actually, Fran had to push him to try dating in season 2 - so you kind of feel like Marla and any other flings he had wouldn't have happened without Fran's influence. And Fran isn't even upset about the Marla fling - she is more upset that he was self-righteous about her and Nigel. And very happy to be able to use his "indiscretions" to get him off his high horse. But the, season 5 had a lot of weirdness and weird behavior by everyone - some episodes are so bizarre I feel like someone is dreaming them, and I wonder if Niles has woken up from his heart attack yet. (I can't take all the credit for that speculation -someone else on another board mentioned it.) Through that season, seemed to go back and forth between "Fran and Max are ready to sleep together or take the next step in their relationship, and outside forces keep preventing it" and "the reason they haven't taken the next step is because Max is still being skittish and distant." One episode goes one way, the next goes the other way, and back and forth. And it's more like "Max isn't very good at relationships" versus "he's still not ready to have one yet" which makes him lose his appeal by the time the proposal happens. And Fran gets really over-the-top desperate and insecure (as does CC), and Fran also tries to back out of marrying Max several times, even after he commits. The cliffhanger on their honeymoon...yes. Again, feels like someone's bizarre dream. And soap-opera-ish. And frankly, it deprives Max and Fran of a happy ending. They never got a real honeymoon. And I couldn't see Max and Fran coping even as well as they did in the wild like that...they're both so pampered. If they had to do the deserted island thing, I wish they had done more with the idea of "being away from civilization = releasing your inhibitions." So more of the time there could have them...getting romantic. And then, in the next episode after that, Max is getting upset about Fran being loud in bed. So, the honeymoon's over already. He had always been hesitant, reluctant to jump in, etc, but clearly he was also going crazy with his attraction to Fran. Shouldn't he have, at that point, been more into the romance / passion, like, well - like a newlywed? And the episode is about them learning to compromise with different personalities...(Fran trying to be less forward, Max trying to be less uptight). When they had been living in the same house for five years and raising kids together! Admittedly, not (apparently) intimate, and that makes a difference, but they knew the things about each other that are the subject of that episode, "Fran Gets Shushed." Comparing "Fran Gets Shushed" to the last few where Niles and CC are involved...you really end up with the impression that THEY (Niles and CC) wound up with the better physical relationship. |

I will say this about "The Honeymoon's Overboard." I love the fact that CC, and only CC, has it together. I know we're supposed to think her using the disappearance for publicity is cold-blooded, but it shows her tough businesswoman side. She succeeds in keeping the company going and then...she is one who organizes the search who is successful. And all anyone can talk about is how great FRAN has been. That seemed to happen a lot - I'm not surprised she had resentment for Fran.
But it seems like Max being away is good for her. I do wish, though, that if they had to make CC go away for mental health treatment, they had made that more of a turning point for her in terms of getting over Max and/or realizing it was really Niles she wanted. There are times soon after she comes back where she seems not to like Max, like when she reveals his flings over the last few years in "The Best Man" but in The Wedding and some parts of season 6 she still acts/seems in love with him. And some things happened in season 4 to indicate Niles and CC falling for each other -then in parts of season 5 he gets meaner - more pranks - one of the reasons for her breakdown, (some of the web site synopses say things like "Niles plays pranks on CC until she snaps") and then in season 6 their interacts are much more playful and banter-y again. And, when he starts pursuing her toward the end, it seems like no one remembers either that they went on dates in season 4, or that he might have contributed to the breakdown. They reminded us with dialogue about things that happened in the past with Fran and Max, but they didn't bring up things that had happened between Niles and CC. And even though there had always been indications that they were into each other, the switch in "The Dummy Twins" from CC being in denial to their being in a relationship was too fast...I felt like they had to be pretending with the fight on the stairs. |

Fran Drescher: I shot down Donald Trump's request to make him a "billionaire" on The Nanny
Drescher recalled on Late Night with Seth Meyers Trump's 1996 cameo on her CBS sitcom that features her telling the future president, "all you millionaires are alike." Afterward, Trump’s assistant sent a note to her then-husband and Nanny producer Peter Marc Jacobson: “Mr. Trump is not a millionaire. He’s a billionaire and we’d like you to change the script.” Drescher, in her power as co-creator and executive producer, says she shot down the request. |
