Default Have the Super Bowl Halftime shows gone downhill?

Every year when the Super Bowl is played next to the actual game itself I've noticed that the halftime shows of the Super Bowl have lost it's appeal and I can't figure out what they have done to them. Take for instance ever since U2 starred in their first solo halftime show in 2002 I noticed that every halftime show has one singer now sing a concert now rather than a whole list of singers. Is this because the NFL now wants solo halftime shows in the Super Bowl now? I remember when in the 80's and 90's when the halftime shows used to be big affairs in the Super Bowl and had singers such as Billy Joel Ray Charles Queen Latifah Aretha Franklin Elton John Garth Brooks Michael Jackson George Michael and other singers it was fun to watch and each halftime show would be themed too. But I think ever since the famous Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction scene in the 2003 Super Bowl halftime show I think they have learned that solo shows cost less than group halftime shows. But if they had more well known singers such as Taylor Swift Seal and Al Green to groups like Santana and The Beach Boys it would improve the halftime shows and make it a hit in Super Bowl ratings

What are you talking about downhill? J-Lo and Shakira got a lot of praise for this one.

A variety of singers/entertainers would be better, something that appeals to more people. I didn't care much for J-Lo & Shakira but then I'm not the target audience. It felt like watching a strip club show to me, something that would appeal to a large male audience which I understand, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. I may stop watching the half-time shows from now on. But hey, this is just one woman's opinion.

J-Lo sure is hot stuff for a woman of 50 years old, but her gyrating on that pole was a bit much.

I agree with you Bestie. Superbowl half time is not what it used to be. Also they try to fit in their politics. JLO had children in cages. This is just sad. Almost as sad as JLO trying to out hootchie cootchie Shakira. I had to turn the channel. Also, why don't the NFL get some country artists to perform? Do we really need foreigners performing at Americas greatest game? At the Superbowl I want to see 100% America. My favorite part was the tribute to the flag with the Medal of honor winner. What was your favorite part?

I agree!! Not my cup of tea!! Even my Hubby, who enjoyed looking at them, he didn't care for the singing / the music genre !

J-Lo was born in New York. She is 100% America.
Shakira was born in Columbia, but she is an AMERICAN citizen now... 100%.

I suggest you get your facts straight.

I really don't care as I'm only watching the game itself.

Plus if you must remember you're not the only one watching and if you don't like a certain artists, they are plenty that do.

Get over it. There was a time when the HT show consisted of only marching bands.

It was trashy and gross. Crotch shots and pole dancing is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira exorcised the demons of Maroon 5 with energetic Super Bowl halftime

J.Lo and Shakira's co-headlining halftime performance was so entertaining, high-energy and memorable that it took less than 10 hours for their halftime show to surpass last year's much-criticized Maroon 5 halftime in the number of YouTube views. "I've written repeatedly in the past about what a thankless gig the Super Bowl halftime show is," says Daniel Fienberg. "Most people are only paying attention to make fun of it and to complain about how Prince did it better. But if ever there were a year to make a risk-free appearance nestled between the commercials and football on TV's most-watched night of the year, it's this year, because the chances of anybody outside of the Adam Levine Extended Family looking back on 2019's Maroon 5 performance with anything resembling positivity is low. Most Super Bowls, you have to rise to the level of 'Slightly less good than Prince,' but for Super Bowl LIV, it was probably enough to be 'Slightly better than Maroon 5.' To their absolute credit, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira came far closer to the former than the latter." Fienberg adds that it didn't matter if there was lip-syncing: "That halftime show was just pure fun, unless you want to acknowledge that it's righteously and wonderfully political for two Latinx singers to have shared and dominated the stage on TV's biggest night, especially when one of them sang — or 'sang' — the chorus of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.' while draped in a magnificent Puerto Rican flag boa/robe."
