Elfman is the man behind the music for the likes of Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Sleppy Hollow, and - the reason why JOE was chatting to him - Nightmare Before Christmas.

He will be performing his role of Jack Skellington live at the 3Arena this December, joined by his animated co-star Catherine O'Hara, with full details of that event right here.

However, perhaps the one piece of music he is more famous for than any other, is the opening credits score for The Simpsons. Running for 30 years, and now on its 31st season, there have been many conversations in recent years that The Simpsons is well passed its prime, and that the curtain should be pulled on the show by now.

When we posed that to Elfman, he revealed that may already be in the works:

"Well, from what I've heard, it is coming to an end. So, that argument will also come to an end. [...] I don't know for a fact, but I've heard that it will be in its last year."

We told him that we were surprised to hear that, and he said that he could be wrong, before going on to talk about how he never expected The Simpsons to run for as long as it did:

"All I can say is that I'm so flabbergasted and amazed that it has lasted as long as it did. So, you have to realise, when I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no-one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.

"Really, I expected it would run for three episodes and get cancelled, and that would be that, because it was so weird at the time, and I just didn't think it had a chance. So believe me, that is one of the truly big surprises in my life."

Great, something to incite disputes between those who think The Simpsons should end its original run and those who think the run should still continue. I think such disputes won't end until there is an announcement of The Simpsons ending for real, and then it'll be fr the best. The Simpsons right now is the most evil show on U.S. broadcast TV, and Al Jean is a very corrupt man.

Al Jean already said he wanted 30 seasons of The Simpsons, this year we got our 30 seasons. The longer The Simpsons's original run is (especially despite the scheduling limitations on Fox Network induced by Thursday Night NFL and WWE SmackDown), the more new and more promising shows on the Fox network are going to get screwed over. I honestly can't believe how serious Al Jean was about The Simpsons going for as long as it wants and wanting to reach certain milestones. I want to see that Simpsons series finale bad!

Sadly...The Simpsons Finale...if they ever have one...already sounds like a disappointment...they start all over again from 1989.

I even call The Simpsons "The Elmo of Prime-Time Television"...because it took-over Prime Time!

We should have anticipated somebody asking "What about Bless the Harts and the other animated shows that the FOX Network is launching this year?". And The Simpsons also overtook The Big Bang Theory (its series finale aired last May).

While TBBT had a dominant run, its 12 seasons are still nowhere close to what The Simpsons has as far as longevity. How could The Simpsons overtake The Big Bang Theory when it started long before?

The two-year renewal for season 31 (2019-20) and 32 (2020-21).

I never wanted The Big Bang Theory to be one of the hundreds of long-running series that just came and went during The Simpsons's tenure no matter how big their ratings have gotten, but now Jim Parsons will be guest on an upcoming Simpsons episode to essentially "concede defeat", proving that no matter how big a series that launched after The Simpsons gets, that younger series will be overtaken by The Simpsons. Period.

And Johnny Galecki (another star of TBBT) is about to have a child with someone who wasn't even born when The Simpsons debuted.

I dunno how to word it, but...It's not even Matt Groeining's show anymore.

He put some creativity in The Simpsons but it's biggest blunder is...The Simpsons became a parody of itself...they're like The Beach Boys!

Al Jean is the Mike Love of The Simpsons...drill it to death and make it something that is now nothing!

So, if The Simpsons ever does cease first-run production for good, could Gracie Films end up shutting down? The most recent productions from Gracie Films were The Edge of Seventeen (with STX Films), in 2016, and Icebox (with HBO), in 2018, and The Simpsons is their only remaining TV show.
