The Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin will be taped this summer in New York City, with a premiere date announced at a later date. “Getting roasted will be the greatest honor of my lifetime besides being a father, a husband, hosting SNL seventeen times, receiving Golden Globes, Emmys and working with Martin Scorsese,” said Baldwin. He succeeds last year's roastee Bruce Willis. Alec Baldwin has done so many great things, it will be a unique treat to spend a night focusing on everything he’d rather forget," said Comedy Central's Jonas Larsen, who will serve as executive producer of the roast. Jeff Ross defends his Historical Roast of Anne Frank, previews his roast of Alec Baldwin
“We roast Abe Lincoln, Freddie Mercury, Cleopatra, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali and Anne Frank," the Roastmaster General says of his Netflix series in an interview on The Last Laugh podcast, responding to the backlash to the roasting of Frank. "And the only ones complaining are the Jews. I was channelling something I once heard Mel Brooks say, which is essentially, you can’t take back the lives lost, but you can seek some revenge through ridicule. And by making Hitler and the Nazis a joke, I think that’s a victory. The Jews survive, and not only that, we flourish. And as Anne Frank, played eloquently by Rachel Feinstein on the show, she says to Hitler, you know the greatest revenge, Hitler, is the fact that you’re being portrayed by the loudest, most annoying Jew we could find.” As for this summer's roast of Baldwin, Ross recalled that he once interviewed the actor for The Daily Show many years ago. "I remember him yelling at a publicist, so there’s always that, the mood swings," says Ross. "People go, oh, there’s so many messed-up things about somebody to make fun of, but to me it’s easier to make fun of someone when they have a million hits, and he has so many good films. It’s more fun to watch those than watch bad ones and make fun of those.” |

I often suspected that Alec Baldwin has been able to [whether the storm of his various controversies is because he has been able to transition from a leading man into a successful character actor. In other words, he gets a “pass” because while he’s still bankable, he's not really an A-lister (at least in the traditional sense) any longer. None of his actions have been too outrageous for productions to use him. You can argue that Hollywood has been more willing to give him a pass since he's politics is more in-line with Hollywood's than say somebody like Mel Gibson.
I also think that a lot of Baldwin is fortunate that his more notorious incidents such as the voice-mail situation involving his daughter occurred before social media was such a thing. It's harder to keep tabs and press on something that happened long ago and is technically "hear-say". It makes you wonder if Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein would've taken much longer to take down without the aid of social media. The ironic thing is that his dark past (if you want to call it that) may have actually been somewhat beneficial in that case involving the voice-mail. What I mean is that Baldwin never really had a "nice guy" or morally upstanding public image. Imagine if somebody likes say Tom Hanks, was caught on tape verbally lambasting one of his kids. Or if you want to look at the female side, Meg Ryan's career was pretty much ruined when she was caught having an affair with Russell Crowe while still married to Dennis Quaid. Bare in mind, that Meg Ryan up until that point, had a very wholesome, girl-next-door public image. |
