From what I understand, Delta had been diagnosed with manic depression (what we know refer to as chronic depression or clinical depression) which at the time was still rather unknown. So I think, suffering from this horrible affliction, Delta may have unwittingly set off a war of words with Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. I believe that poor Dixie got caught in the middle.
In hindsight the chief complaints about Delta were that she was often late to rehearsals, her attitude sometimes changed without warning and that she was often angry, sad and upset. All of these, along with her noticeable weight gain over the series run are classic symptoms and side-effects of somebody that is deeply depressed. |

To make a long story short, Delta, who was at the time newly diagnosed with bipolar disorder had done an interview with Barbara Walters and made serious allegations against the producers, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason. Delta said that they were working her too hard and the set of the show as hostile for her.
This angered the Thomasons and created a rift on set between Delta and Dixie Carter, who sided with the producers, ending her friendship with Delta. Delta also reportedly tried going over the head of the producers and tried negotiating with the studio (or network) to get a larger salary and to get the Thomasons fired. This all backfired and Delta was fired from the series. |
