Question Why did MTV give up on its scripted shows?

Their last popular scripted shows based on memory were Scream and Teen Wolf.

Now they're only about the VMAs and reality TV. What happened? Why did they completely give up on their scripted programming?

Scream (the series) wasn't very popular and got terrible ratings. It was cancelled and later rebooted on VH1.

Teen Wolf was cancelled because it had ran it's course.

But to answer your question; I think it was a mix of economics within it's parent company (scripted shows are expensive to produce and often result in lackluster profits for the company) and having tried a number of programs that simply didn't get the type of attention they wanted or needed to turn a profit.

Reality shows are cheaper to produce so if they fail you can just replace it with another one.

Many if not all of Viacom's channels have become "zombie" networks with zero original programming. We've already seen that with Logo, TV Land, MTV2, and TeenNick. All used to have original programming but now are just reruns of acquired shows and shows from more popular Viacom networks.

TVLand on the other hand still only has original series: Younger. It's just recently announced that Younger renewed for season 7
