Gina Rodriguez is set to executive produce the potential spinoff with Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. Jane writer Valentina Garza will write the proposed spinoff. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "details on the spinoff are scarce but it is poised to feature a whole new cast and follow a storyline from the flagship series. It's unclear if any of the stars of the original — including leading lady Gina Rodriguez — will have on-screen roles in the spinoff. The potential series will not air as a backdoor pilot as part of Jane the Virgin's final season." |

"Jane the Virgin" Spin-off gets Pilot Order at The CW
by Nellie Andreeva January 23, 2019 Written by "Jane" scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Silberling, "Jane the Novela" is envisioned as a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of "Jane the Virgin", where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself. The first installment takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long. https://deadline.com/2019/01/riverda...rs-1202540608/ |

Gina Rodriguez Says "Jane the Virgin" Spin-off Pilot is "Unbelievable"
by Samantha Highfill Jan. 31 2019 The CW recently announced that its ordered a pilot for a "Jane the Virgin" spin-off, titled "Jane the Novela", which has been described as a telenovela anthology series where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself. "Jane" showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and star Gina Rodriguez — who are both attached to the spin-off as executive producers — took the stage Thursday during the 2019 Winter Television Critics Association press tour, where they confirmed that Rodriguez will serve as the narrator. But when asked if we’d see other "Jane" cast members on the spin-off, Urman said, “Probably not the first year,” before adding, “Once we get a year where we establish new characters, then we can see what comes… I love [the Jane the Virgin] cast I’d be lucky to work with every single one of them again and I really hope to.” Rodriguez added that spin-off writer Valentine Garza knocked the pilot out of the park. “It is fantastic. The pilot is unbelievable,” Rodriguez said. “We hope we can give something just as great as we did with Jane the Virgin.” https://ew.com/tv/2019/01/31/jane-th...ina-rodriguez/ |

Hunter Parrish To Star in The CW’s "Jane the Virgin" Spin-off Pilot
by Nellie Andreeva March 15, 2019 "Weeds" alum Hunter Parrish is set as the male co-lead opposite Jacqueline Grace Lopez in "Jane the Novela", The CW’s "Jane the Virgin" spin-off pilot. The first installment takes place at the intersection of Napa Valley wine country and the San Francisco art scene and pairs family secrets and sins of the past with twists, tropes, and a bloody bottle of red. It centers on Estela (Lopez), an up-and-coming art curator who has spent years playing it safe and coloring within the lines. But a shocking secret changes everything and forces her to live a double life. Being “in the tradition of Jane the Virgin,” "Jane the Novela" mirrors the setup of the original series. It too follows a driven, imaginative twentysomething Latina woman (Lopez) who is torn between her boyfriend, Luen, and Felix (Parrish), a handsome, rich guy. In this case, Luen is head of security while Felix is in the wine business vs. Jane Villanueva’s (Rodriguez) cop boyfriend Michael and love interest Rafael, a hotel heir. Parrish’s Felix is Napa’s most eligible bachelor and heir apparent to his family’s winery. Although his future looks bright, Felix is tortured by the secrets of his past. Marcia Cross plays Felix’s glamorous mother Renata. https://deadline.com/2019/03/jane-th...ot-1202576563/ |

"Jane the Novela" Casts Remy Hii, Ivonne Coll, Benito Martinez, Holland Roden
by Nellie Andreeva March 18, 2019 Remy Hii (Marco Polo) is set as the male co-lead alongside Hunter Parrish in "Jane the Novela", The CW’s "Jane the Virgin" spin-off pilot. Also, providing continuity from the original series in front of the camera, "Jane The Virgin" co-star Ivonne Coll has been set as a series regular in the telenovela anthology offshoot, along with Benito Martinez and Holland Roden. Hii’s Luen is Estela’s sweet, dependable, long-term boyfriend. When the life he’s planned for himself and Estela is threatened by Felix, Luen will stop at nothing to win back the woman he loves. Coll will play Camila, Estela’s adoptive mother. Camila would do anything to protect her daughter and the life they have built, even lie to her. On Jane the Virgin, Coll plays Jane’s grandmother and Xo’s mother Alba. Martinez portrays Raul, the winery’s enigmatic riddler. Nobody knows Napa’s terroir like he does – he specializes in collecting dirt on everyone. Roden plays Sienna, Felix’s not-so-regular sister who is determined to save the world, one endangered animal at a time; hopefully using her family’s moolah. https://deadline.com/2019/03/jane-th...en-1202577769/ |

"Jane the Novela" Not Going Forward

CW passed on Jane the Novela because "it didn't have the full quirkiness and fun" of Jane the Virgin
Jane the Novela's rejection doesn't mean The CW isn't interested in another Jane the Virgin spinoff. “We’ve reached out to Jennie (Snyder Urman) and said if she wishes, we’re interested in pursuing a potential other spinoff for Jane. It is in Jennie’s court," CW president Mark Pedowitz said during The CW's upfronts conference call. |
