I always noticed though, all her boyfriends in the show never were really good looking. I always thought she could get a better looking guy!

Carol was the only reason I watched this show. Overall I thought the show was below average. Carol was the only and best thing about this show.

I agree that Carol had daddy issues. I think she was also looking for stability for her and Philip, and to get out of Maude's house. She's like her mother in that she's opinionated and very vocal, and it did cost her at least one job. And in those days, single moms were really looked down upon (unless they were widows). So while she was a feminist, she also knew her prospects were limited.

She was also pig-headed enough to dig her heels in hard when Maude started in on her about it. I don't know that she was gold-digging per se, but I think it was more of a situation in that she felt she would eventually grow fond of him and it would work out in the end. In reality, I know a few people who married someone who was old enough to be a parent (or close to it). I only know one couple that worked out long-term, and she passed away before they could get to the next phase in life (he is younger than she was). My brother in law is dating a woman who could be his mother, age wise, but they'll never marry, and I believe the relationship is largely "platonic" if you know what I mean (I think she has medical issues).
