"The whole world is impacted by the #MeToo movement, not just politics," says Veep showrunner David Mandel. "But we’re in a semi-unique situation where it has hit the worlds of politics and entertainment quite heavily and we are both. At the end of the day, Veep's take had more to do with it being a good story and a funny story, as much as anything else." Timothy Simons recalls pitching Veep's #MeToo episode The actor found inspiration in learning that Donald Trump had utilized non-disclosure agreements on his campaign staffers. Simons thought the NDAs could be combined with a #MeToo-themed storyline involving Congressman Jonah Ryan. "Jonah is the perfect vessel for (Veep's #MeToo take) because he historically has always been such a well known verbal sexual harasser," says Simons. |
