TV "Veronica Mars" Revival Series Ordered at Hulu

"Veronica Mars" Revival Series Near Deal at Hulu with Kristen Bell Reprising Role
by Nellie Andreeva
August 21, 2018

Rob Thomas’ cult favorite noir mystery drama "Veronica Mars" starring Kristen Bell is making another comeback, this time as an eight-episode limited series at Hulu.

I hear the streaming platform is finalizing deals for the new installment, with star Bell set to reprise her role as sleuth Veronica Mars. I hear there have been preliminary conversations about bringing back a number of the other cast members from the original series and follow-up movie.

It will not interfere with Bell’s duties as star of the NBC comedy series "The Good Place".

As he has done with all things Veronica Mars-related, Thomas is said to be shepherding the project through Warner Horizon TV, the cable/streaming division of Warner Bros TV, which produced the original series.

Reps for Hulu and WBTV declined comment.

Why another Veronica Mars revival is a bad idea
The Kristen Bell-starring teen noir mystery series already had its revival, a 2014 movie funded mainly by its fans. "We can’t possibly need more than that," says Rebecca Fishbein. "The whole premise of Veronica Mars was that she was a wise-cracking teen who solved crimes and survived high school at the same time. Now she’s an adult, and based on what I recall from the film, she’s just as useless and f*cked up as the rest of us. That’s fine. Growing up is hard! But I don’t need my heroes to age with me, and these reboots are starting to feel lazier by the minute."

Why a Veronica Mars reboot makes sense
"Veronica Mars was and always shall be a detective series, and the mystery genre has been built on the idea that creators and actors can return to their most compelling sleuths as they please," says Meghan O'Keefe, who points out that "Helen Mirren returned to Prime Suspect after a 13 year gap, and Idris Elba continues to come back to Luther. It’s a genre that invites reinvention so long as the spirit of the star detective remains the same. The character is the hook, not the setting, style, or mystery itself."

Report: Veronica Mars revival on Hulu plans to begin shooting next month, even though it hasn't been made official
Hulu and Warner Bros. are still hammering out a deal to revive the classic teen noir series, according to TVLine, which adds that the plan is to film the eight-episode series from October to March with the storyline revolving around a serial killer who terrorizes Neptune.

"Veronica Mars" Revival Series Confirmed at Hulu; Additional Details Revealed
by Denise Petski
Sept. 20, 2018

It’s a done deal. Hulu has given a direct-to-series eight-episode order to a "Veronica Mars" revival. The series, with Kristen Bell reprising her role as the title character, is slated to premiere in 2019.

Bell first confirmed the news on social media.

In addition, Hulu has landed streaming rights to the complete series in a new deal with original series producer Warner Bros. TV. The agreement gives Hulu SVOD rights to all past episodes of the original series.

Seasons 1-3 will be available for streaming, as well as the 2014 feature film, beginning in 2019.

The hourlong limited series hails from the cult fave’s original’s creator Rob Thomas, who will pen the first episode. In the revival, spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry.

After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

"Veronica Mars" is not going to interfere with Bell’s duties as star of the NBC comedy series "The Good Place".

Veronica Mars' Hulu revival will be set five years after the movie

“The movie was nostalgic — the Hulu limited series isn’t going to be,” tweeted creator Rob Thomas. “One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.”
